Perry says he will compete nationwide

Three days after cancelling appearances in South Carolina and returning to Texas to “reassess” his presidential campaign, Texas Gov. Rick Perry released a statement Friday saying he will compete nationwide.

"As my campaign for president moves forward, our superior organization and resources allow me to compete nationwide, where I’m confident our unmatched jobs record, conservative fiscal and social policies, and status as the only Washington outsider can win over Republican voters," Perry said in a news release announcing he had filed paperwork to be listed on primary election ballots in Arizona, Illinois, Ohio, Vermont and Washington, D.C.

If Perry comes in fifth in South Carolina like he did in Iowa, he's going to have a hard time selling his viability in Florida, no matter who he has working for him.

I'm not defending Perry, but South Carolina is an open primary, and the liberals are going to pull out all the stops to help Willard. The national media is pushing the idea that Willard is running away with SC as well. Too many Baptists to allow that to happen.

Then again, I didn't see Nikki Haley jumping on Willard's bandwagon. If SC goes to Willard, the GOP is in trouble, not just for this election, but in general.

Glad to hear it. I’m worried that Santorum will be the lamb led to slaughter, but it’s still early and no votes have been cast in SC, only Iowa.

The meme on Governor Perry that he’s dumb and stupid isn’t true. That was tried on Sarah Palin too and I resented it then, just as much as I resent it now.

I’m all but certain that Perry will keep his word and his policies are much like Newt’s. That he is currently holding elected office is my only concern. I would rather someone not at all beholden to the damn GOP, but at least he’s a Washington outsider and not a favorite of the Beltway punditry.

She already endorsed him a few weeks ago.

I'm still really surprised by that, but a FReeper told me that she was just returning a political favor to Romney.

I wonder how much it's helping Romney in SC, to have her stumping for him.

I don't know. My initial thought was she was doing what she was told for her own reelection. However, now thinking about it, it may come back to haunt her.

It'd be disappointing if the Tea Party movement didn't try and boot her out of her next primary. Anybody shilling for Romney needs to go.

Romney endorsed Nikki Haley early on, but Sarah Palin’s endorsement and the Tea Party put her in office. Haley could be looking for Romney to name her his VP, but she won’t help him carry the South. I live in the deep South, and I won’t vote for Romney. No way!

Dunno. I reckon she’s ambitious, to a fault!
Romney is power hungry and tries to buy everyone.
Apparently, she sold out early on and for a low price.

I need to go back to our FReepathon thread, but I have been praying that South Carolina will give Romney a down home Southern welcome to the “damn Yankee” if ya know what I mean...lol.

I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide
ZZ TOP

lyrics Songwriters: Beard, Frank; Gibbons, William F; Hill, Joe

Well, I was rolling down the road in some cold blue steel
I had a blues man in back and a beautician at the wheel
We going downtown in the middle of the night
We laughing and I’m joking and we feeling alright

Oh, I’m bad, I’m nationwide
Yes, I’m bad, I’m nationwide

Easing down the highway in a new Cadillac
I had a fine fox in front, I had three more in the back
They sporting short dresses, wearing spike-heel shoes
They smoking Lucky Strikes and wearing nylons too

‘Cause we bad, we nationwide
Yeah, we bad, we nationwide

Well, I was moving down the road in my V-8 Ford
I had a shine on my boots, I had my sideburns lowered
With my New York brim and my gold tooth displayed
Nobody give me trouble ‘cause they know I got it made
I’m bad, I’m nationwide

Well, I’m bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, I’m nationwide

Still love Newt’s guts. Would love to see him clean up the disaster that is DC right now. My feeling is only he or Perry will bother. Rick S is a nice guy, but I just don’t see him able to stand up as tall.

Sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Perry spent nearly $480 per vote that he got in Iowa which is not a very good Return On Investment (ROI) given his finish.

For comparison, Romney spent $154 per vote, and Santorum spent around $20 per vote. That kind of spending would bankrupt Perry in SC, but thankfully for him, he shouldn't have to spend that much.

Iowa is a caucus. One needs to be motivated to turn out in person and meet folks face-to-face. Seriously helping a candidate involves staying a few hours and paying attention, and usually involves advance preparation and a commitment to go to the next level. Takes more money and effort to motivate people to this extent.

South Carolina is a primary. Much easier to drop by and vote anonymously.

Vote totals could be four times higher in SC than Iowa.
