MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Even Rick Perry's top advisers thought it was over.
After the Texas governor finished fifth in the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday night, Perry's staff and volunteers gathered around the bar in a Des Moines hotel to say goodbyes, drink beer and mourn what appeared to be the end of his quest for the Republican nomination for president.
Perry had, after all, just said that he would return to Texas and "reassess" his campaign in a speech that had all the markings of a withdrawal from the race.
Only it wasn't. Less than 12 hours later, Perry - still in Iowa - surprisingly declared that he would continue in the race, and make South Carolina his make-or-break state.
What changed his mind?
Senior Perry aides, friends and staff members told Reuters that after a restless night, Perry and his staff ultimately decided there were four reasons the campaign should continue.

Mitt promised Perry the VP spot.
Give it a freaking rest.
Perry will go after Romeny with savage intensity in South Carolina. This notion that some how Perry is acting as a stalking horse for Romeny is not only silly, it’s offensive and insulting.
Doubt it. Neither Mitt nor Perry would have anything to gain from Perry as VP.
I don’t believe for a second that Perry would do anything to help MittWitt.
One from where? oh, Massachusetts and the other, surprise surprise, Texas.
Brilliant political strategy—the Southern Strategy.
I'm only half serious on this one but Gov Perry IS a professional politician so let us just say I wouldn't be surprised.
PERRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! President Perry.
Perrys govt reform speech "This is not red meat. This is raw meat, still steaming from the cow"
The Vetoes of Rick Perry - As Texas governor, he broke records and earned conservative support.
What’s with all these conspiracy theories?
The article states four perfectly logical reasons why Perry chose to stay in. Chief among them, considering the way this primary season has gone, is that he thinks he has the ability to raise money and hold on longer than Santorum.
In another year, Perry might be gone. But he seems to want to try the southern primaries, and see if he can get his chance to be the anti-Romney, and hope that by that point he’ll be the only one left.
The VP talk is worthy of DU conspiracists. It doesn’t have any evidence to support it, whereas the obvious reasons in the article make perfect sense.
If you think that Rick Perry would rather be Mitt Romeny’s Vice President in preference to being the Governor of Texas, you don’t know Rick Perry - or Texans.
But then you read the article and are here to learn, not ball up the thread with nonsense.
I have to say that 100% of the people I have met who liked Rick Perry were on Free Republic. And there were probably fewer than 10 of them. But they liked him a lot.
MONEY: Not sure what the law is on contributions. I don't think he can use it for anything except his campaign.
That is why Herman didn't drop out just suspended his campaign. He is still campaigning for his 9-9-9 plan, plus he doesn't have another job as does Rick.
Both Perry and Santorum are Christian conservatives—plus Perry is a veteran and Santorum was an aggressive advocate for a strong national defense when he was on Capital Hill.
After Mitt gets his liberal 25% it may be Santorum and Perry who split the remaining 75% leaving Newt and the Nut out in the street.
Could be interesting.
It certainly has been so far!
Happy, by the time Santorum, Gingrich and Perry are through with Romeny, he won’t get 25%, not even close.
Matching Fund’s - No other reason. As the saying goes, follow the money.
Looking back on your posting history I can see that you aren’t a complete moron.
