The Boeing Co., for decades the brand that helped support Wichita's claim as the aviation capital of the world, announced Wednesday it will shut down facilities in the city by the end of 2013 and send work to plants in three other states as it deals with defense spending cutbacks.
The closure will cost 2,160 workers their jobs and end the firm's presence in an area where it has been a major employer for generations.
The decision was not a surprise because Boeing said in November it was looking at closing the Wichita plant. But it still drew an angry response from Kansas lawmakers who helped Boeing land a lucrative Air Force refueling tanker project in February and had expected thousands of jobs to come to Wichita with it. Instead, the tanker work will go to Boeing's facilities near Seattle.

I wonder if this was the deal to get the National Labor Board or whatever their name is to drop the suit over the Charleston plant taking work from the NW?
Florida is a right to work state also.....with a lot of unions.....where I now reside when I’m not overseas.
Very sad. During the war, my mom and aunt worked at Cessna in Wichita, with friends forever working over at Boeing. Rosie the Riviter was real. I knew them and they were mine, and they were gorgeous women to boot. The men were in Hutchinson at the airfield where the war pilots to-be were training in their planes, night and day.
The Aviation Capitol of the World dies for real with this loss.
Appreciate the post. Calls for a toast. To Wichita.
Question: are the Kansas workers unionized?
(Seattle ain't known for cheap.)
Hey, Seattle works. They get all the jobs over Wichita. They are OBAMA’S BASE!
You have obviously never done work for the DOD; finding a uniform is like finding that proverbial needle.
The Kansas governor, U.S. senators and U.S. representatives are all Republican.
That’s why this is happening.
These damn fools have to start learning to play hardball. Obama orders a “recess” appointment, a senator has to hold up five other appointments.
Obama acts punitively against your state or district, you gather up a few other such targeted pols and you yank some funding for New York, California, Washington state and so on.
To assume that this is the only reason it is happening is woeful and myopic.
Unions are counterproductive, internally and externally. Internally with its negotiated restrictions, and externally with its politics.
The more unions push for socialism, the more unproductive America becomes, the more money is demanded for social issues by reason of association with said socialism, which means less money back in their direction for jobs.
Cuts have to happen. I hope the unions are happy now. Their well paying jobs are going so “spread the wealth” can march forward.
The shared runway for BMAC and McConnell AFB was where I learned to fly at the Air Force Aero Club, private ticket, back in the 70’s......:o)
Long azzz runway to play with a C172. Wichita is or was the airplane patch of the USA pretty much at one time. Beechcraft , Cessna, Learjet, Boeing, McConnell AFB all within a few miles of each other......
Union dues support socialist democrats and socialist democrats kill defense industry jobs . They paid for what they got IMO.
Stay safe FWF ~!
My grandmother was a “Rosie the Riveter” in Wichita during the war. Thank God for all the women who forgot all the nonsense they’d been told all their lives about “Women can’t do that!” . . . and just did what their country needed them to do. A toast to them.
Hetty, that reply was so nice to hear. May God richly bless all those heroic “Rosie” girls.
