The Great Golden State Business Exodus
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 1/3/12 | Staff

States: California's in trouble. Businesses are leaving along with intellectual and investment capital and skilled workers. But rather than face up to serious problems, legislators pass silly laws. One would think that given the serious nature of the state's problems, the legislature would focus on solutions at the exclusion of all else. Instead, lawmakers — what would we ever do without them? — found the time in 2011 to trespass even deeper into Californians' personal lives. Topping off Sacramento's monument to foolishness is a law requiring children younger than 8, except for those taller than 4 feet 9 inches,

I am not saying I am serious “intellectual capital” but I do have a six-figure income and California (the land of my birth and home for over 5 decades) pushed me out with its insanity.

I love being a Texan — much smarter laws and much nicer folk.

Cauliphonya appears to be intentionally driving out all of the normal people.

I thought all business had already left? Hmmmm... I guess there are one or two left... With big cuts to welfare, I guess they'll be leaving too. Well be stuck with armies of illegal alien landscapers cutting grass for the wealthy. Of course if all the wealthy are gone too??

I rented the movie version of Atlas Shrugged(Part 1) last night. The movie followed the book pretty well, but this article reminded me of the stupid way the politicians in that movie behaved.

Congratulations on your move! I have family in Texas and always enjoy visiting them.
I can definitely see retiring there.

Vranich calls California the worst state in the nation to locate a business, Los Angeles the worst city. He estimates a business can save 40% in costs just by leaving.

Not too long and a company won't be able to afford the price of doing business in CA.

I know that no one else in California will agree with me on this, but this is partly a result of Prop 13.

The good people of California only need to make sure that slightly more than 1/3rd of their representatives are Republicans in order to keep their taxes from going up. Meanwhile the huge majority of Democrats can pass wave after wave of increasingly socialist legislation.

If every vote in the state legislature was simple majority wins, then the Republicans might have a fighting chance to get a majority every once and a while.

Certainly the indoctrinated liberals will support ever-increasing spending and taxing, but the average voter will revolt at some point.

Right now with Prop 13 we all get to have our cake and eat it to: more and more government programs with no fear of raising taxes.

Let our grandchildren eat ...?

It is now also illegal in California...to buy alcoholic beverages at self-checkout lines.

Although its supporters claimed that the purpose of this law was to "protect the children," its real purpose was to protect the jobs of unionized clerks at the check stands and to force fully-automated stores such as Fresh and Easy to hire unionized checkers or go out of business.

You're right. No one in California will agree with you.

“I know that no one else in California will agree with me on this, but this is partly a result of Prop 13.”

Sorry, but I disagree. Without Prop 13, the demise of the state would pick up speed at an alarming rate. As a commercial property owner, I am concerned that the RATs may try to “split off” commercial property from the constraints of Prop 13 and try to finance their madness on the backs of business property owners. My leases now contain a clause that becomes operative if the RATs are ever successful at making this change so that my tenants have to cover the additional taxes should they ever be imposed. On the other hand, they could choose to leave the state and that would be the end of me.
I am just hoping that California crashes before they can get the law changed.

Who cares?

As soon as the democrats get all the illegals voting illegally and they reach 51%, California will vote to secede and join Mexico.

Prop 13 was the best thing that ever happened to CA. Every time a property sells it gets gets reassessed...at a higher rate of course.

Per capita Mexico has more billionaires than any Western nation on Earth. You’d think the landscaping business would be booming down there.
