The objection to contraception has nothing to do with the hygiene regulations, Mosaic or otherwise.

And I’m sure you would agree that just because God gave us the tools, it doesn’t mean that *any* use we put them to is good. A physician can kill with a scalpel as easily as he can heal with one. That we have the tools and technology I do not dispute. My question is, is it morally licit to use them for this purpose?

And again, yes, there can be good reasons to space pregnancy, just as there are good reasons to lose weight. The natural way to do it is to abstain from sex or eating when necessary. But using contraception is like sexual bulimia. It’s the equivalent of gorging yourself silly and then sticking two fingers down your throat over the toilet.

And don’t get me started on the raging hypocrisy of “medicinal contraception” either. The medical profession should be ashamed of itself. Don’t drink, don’t smoke, regulate your diet, don’t eat artificial this or that, but here....I’ll put you on these artificial hormones that will stop you from ovulating.

Although not Catholic, I appreciate the depth and explanation of marriage, love, and sex in this catechism. We are pummeled so much by slogans and soundbites that no one thinks deeply anymore. Of course when God is taken out of the equation too, there is no depth or real thinking in discussions either. Thanks for the post.

It’s not about birth control. It’s not about abortion. The real issue is a culture and tax structure that discourages middle-class women from wanting lots of kids.

You “married folks” should accept the teachings of Christ passed to us through the Catholic Church. Read about Onan.

“However, there is no sin in sex within marriage and there’s no sin for committed couples to use birth control that doesn’t endanger any children who do result and who would never consider abortion for serendipitous pregnancies.”

This is only true, according to Church teaching, if you are talking about NFP.

If you are talking about barrier methods - the Church is still very much opposed to that.

Whether or not I personally agree with Rick - or the Church - on this, is a lesser issue as compared to the fact that Obama is destroying our nation.

Would people really prefer a “catholic” like Pelosi who pubicly and frequently oppose the Church while declaring herself a catholic?

That’s incorrect. Sexual pleasure provides spiritual communion between spouses.

My husband and I have 3 children. That's quite enough.

As a married person who doesn't want any more children, so what?

Just because it is convenient and it is something I want doesn't translate to it being right or good. And no, I am not Catholic.

Birth control is a cornerstone of both the sexual revolution and the modern 2.4 children lifestyle. Both have had large negative effects on Western society.

Try reading about Onan in the bible. He “spilled his seed on the ground” as a method of birth control, and was struck dead. That’s why you’ll occasionally hear condoms referred to as Onanism.

“This, of course, is why Song of Solomon includes so much material on pregnancy and child-rearing.”

I like what I heard once said, that sex is God’s gift to marrieds. It can be said to be a very great sustenance to the couple.

Hey- I had to look up if you prots accept “Song of Solomon”.
I guess you do. So why that book and not “Wisdom” from the same prophet?

This is Rick’s personal opinion.
Every politician has personal opinions - the question is...what will they do in office?

Our current president thinks abortion should be available up to the day of birth.
He thinks infants who survive abortion should not have to be given medical treatment.
Heck..he has alot of frightening opinions.

Which person is preferrable as a president?

Treating women like breeding machines is far more harmful to society. It is also reminiscent of the attitude towards women-as-cattle in Islamic countries.

The year is 2012, not 1612, go see a doc, he can fix you in about five minutes. Now don’t be scared,

Having been there, I do not recommend having yourself sterilized.

You say flippantly, "don't be scared", while in reality the main reason for getting a vasectomy in the first place is fear.

“The large litters you speak of tend to be on govt support - something I won’t do.”

What an ignorant & baseless comment. Exactly WHOM are you speaking of when you say “large litters”? I know many, many Catholic families of 5+ children who do not receive ANY gov assistance.

Sterilizing yourself, whether chemically or surgically, IS mutilation. Sorry you’re too blind to see that - I’ll pray for you.

“The Lord has given us medicine, barrier methods, and sterilization for tools to achieve this with out taking life”

Really? Even though those “medicines” have been classified as carcinogens?

Pleasure is designed by God as positive reinforcement of the good act.

Just as guilt or disease or illness is designed as negative feedback for abusing a pleasure.

Its pretty damn simple.

Birth control perverts the process in a completely unnatural and unintended way.

IMHO the naturalistic argument doesn't hold sway anymore when it comes to childbirth. If nature had its course, women would have 10 children, out of which 7 or 8 would die.

The question shouldn't necessarily be what's natural, but what's ethical / moral.
