More gynecologists opening minds, offices to transgender patients
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | January 2, 2012 | Nicole Brochu

Like many in his community, S.F. Makalani-MaHee spent a lifetime avoiding doctors — particularly the gynecologist, a physician who specializes on an area of the body that has always felt foreign to him.

Born a female but identifying as a man, the Fort Lauderdale community activist dreams of having surgery to complete a transition fulfilled in every other way but one: He still has a woman's genitalia. Changing that would mean going to the doctor and risking the very experiences he has long dreaded: ugly incidents that experts and studies say are all too common for the transgender community.

Wait 'til we have our first transgender President. What a terrific moment to show the world how much we have progressed. /sarc.

Opening their minds? I think what they may be opening is their business bank account ...to RECEIVE.

Born a female but identifying as a man

She is a woman, as are all humans with a vagina. Only liberals create a fictional drama around it to enable a mentally-disturbed person.

Avoiding the Gynecologist is never a good idea.

I had my first Pap Smear at 35,even though it’s usually performed on sexually-active women. My doctor is a man but I feel comfortable enough with him. He’s a Primary Care Dr.,not a Gyno but I trust him with my life.

There’s not a part of me he has not seen.

It’s transsexual,not transgender.

Where’s mrs.Don-o with her “grammar corral”?

PS: I’m not correcting you, just those who keep saying ‘transgender’.

In Hawaiian this person’s alleged/phoney last name means “Eye of the Heaven” and the “Ma-Hee” part is even worse. The word for a man who is transgender is “Mahu” but this one felt like making it “Ma-Hee,” as in a woman transgendering to a male. At least this is my read, and probably the correct one, lol.

That was one strange article. Especially strange was the statement that transgender people experienced high rates of self-multilation... exactly the kind of experience they’ll get from the knife of a surgeon.

By the way... if a woman can decide that she feels like she is really a man, and demands that she be addressed with the masculine pronoun, can I decide that I’m really a black guy trapped in the body of a man who’s half Jewish and half Czech-Hungarian? Why not? Can I decide that I’m really an Athabascan? Chinese? Can I decide that I’m really a teenager trapped in the body of a 55-year-old man?

What seriously bizarre times we live in.

The transgendered probably need much more care and hence generate more revenue for gynos.

I’d be very weary of having that surgery,as tissue death is a very real threat.

It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature. It’ll bite you in the butt.

I’ll have to ask my staunch Conservative gynecologist what he would do in this instance. He’s about to retire anyway because of Obamacare and because of his disgust about seeing the same unmarried girls on Soonercare (medicaid) having babies year after year.

You are right on the money. This is a self-identified ma-hee. Apparently Hawaii was too confining and Florida offers more satisfying avenues of self-expression.

The ma-hee reference would be lost on 99% of Floridians.

That's me!! That's me!!

Well, close.... I turn 60 in two weeks. I still play rock-n-roll in clubs, though not as often as when I was in my 20's.

I don't view myself as any older than maybe...oh... 30 or 35, most of the time. Heck, that's old enough to be a Senator or even President, right?!?

OTOH, would I really be willing to be a teenager again? Only if I retained the lessons I've learned as an adult. Otherwise, no thanks!!
