New Law Forces Older Kids Into Child Seats
SAN DIEGO - A new California law that went into effect Sunday increased the age of child required to use a car seat.
The new state law indicates any child under eight years old must be in a car seat, and if the child is over eight years old and too small for an adult side seat, they also must be in that seat.
It's a change from the previous law for children under six and for those weighing less than 60 pounds.
The state insists keeping older kids in booster seats will increase their chance of surviving a crash by 45 percent. More than a million children will be impacted by the new law.
The purpose behind the law is keeping kids safe on the road.
"I'm totally for it," said Tyrica Reeves. She said if the state wants to increase the age even higher, that's okay with her.
Drivers caught violating the new law will face fines between $475 and $1000.

I remember lying down in the backseat dashboard of my parent’s Plymouth, sitting on the floor of grand-dad’s station wagon, sitting in the back of the pickup truck, etc - didn’t wear a seatbelt until I was old enough to drive.
What’s next for Kalifornia, requiring kids to be in a crib until 7, to prevent them from falling out of bed?
Happy 2012 to you too, sweetie.
Wouldn't work in my house. The 18-month old has been climbing out for over a month now...
Insurance companies run the world.
We gave up on California 3 years ago and moved to another state. Best thing we ever did.
No matter what, I have to have a California-style house (i.e., Spanish colonial). I know they have oodles in Phoenix but I'm hoping to move to a less-congested area, if I make the move at all.
Unless there is some massive turnaround, I think a move is in my future too. And not happy about it, but honest, this is becoming intolerable. Sigh...
What about midgets? Will they need to be in booster seats from now on?

I was that kind of kid. My parents just gave up, put the rails down and put beanbag chairs all around so I wouldn’t get hurt WHEN (never if) I climbed out of my crib.
Of course I also used to climb the cabinets to the top of the fridge and hide in the cupboard above it.
Collectivism’s goal is to remove the humanity from human beings and reduce them to dependent, farm animals.
These “new” California rules mirror the existing Georgia rules.

Probably. Unless they have driver’s licenses, then they can drive, just not ride along.
Some, of course, being more equal than others.
My brother is a Californian - L.A., like you, I think. He’s coming back to the East Coast as soon as he retires in one or two years. I never thought he would leave but he’s had it, too.
Help me here:
What is ‘an adult side seat” ???
Are we talking about Limosines or stretch Limos???
Kalifornia would then have to make a law that you will have to strap the kid in the crib, to make sure they don’t fall. It’s for the CHILDREN!
MrR and I were both born and raised in California. We were afraid we were really going to miss it. Truth is we don’t miss it at all (except occaisonally the weather when it is -20 outside here).
My mom still winters out in CA and I drive her out, and come pick her up in the spring to drive her back. Every year, I schedule it so I have to spend less time in CA. You are right it is intolerable.
Yep, we’re 30 miles east of downtown on the Orange County border. Tell your brother I’m with him in spirit. (So is everyone else I know.)
