I've looked at Tempe and Mesa (on the internet, anyway) and both seem very nice. What about Surprise or Surprise Farms, do you know anything about that area?

No matter what, I have to have a California-style house (i.e., Spanish colonial). I know they have oodles in Phoenix but I'm hoping to move to a less-congested area, if I make the move at all.

Surprise is very nice ... many retirees. Closer to Lake Pleasant and northern (cooler) Arizona than Tempe. Lacks the personality of the more established areas of Metro Phoenix though. Cookie cutter neighborhoods

Hah you sound like me. Everywhere I go I look at the design of the houses and just despise most of them.
