LE MARS, Iowa Newt Gingrichs campaign said on Wednesday that it had raised close to $9 million in the last quarter of the year, a significant improvement over the six-figure sum it raised over the summer, reflecting a flood of small donors who responded to Mr. Gingrichs debate performances and propelled his surge to the top of polls this month.
But as his momentum has evaporated under the assault of rival campaigns, especially those of the better financed candidates Mitt Romney and Representative Ron Paul of Texas, Mr. Gingrich plans to spend nearly all of his available cash in the remaining days before the Jan. 3 caucuses, including $500,000 for television advertisements.
We will have a positive balance of cash on hand hence Im still getting paid, said R.C. Hammond, Mr. Gingrichs spokesman. Any good campaign three days before the Iowa caucuses wont have a lot of cash on hand because it will deplete its resources in an all-out effort to do well.
Besides television, the campaign is spending noticeably on an eight-day bus tour here, Mr. Gingrichs first, and on a four-person staff from New York who arrived this week to identify supporters at campaign events, all of which have been well attended.
Mr. Hammond pointedly compared Mr. Gingrichs fourth-quarter fund-raising total to that of Senator John McCain at the same point in 2007. Mr. McCain, reduced to living off the land with scant funds in Iowa, lost here but went on to win the nomination.
But no matter how Mr. Gingrich does in Iowa a poll Wednesday showed him in a statistical tie with Mr. Paul and Rick Santorum, behind Mr. Romney he will face serious money challenges going forward...

Go, Newtron bomb! Drill, baby, drill!!
Jim out.
They know that Newt will sweep the Southern Primaries and even Perry will do better than Romney in a majority of states. They Rino’s and Democrat Media are trying to build momentum for Romney now in order to down play the Southern State Primaries.
Go Newt! He is the Conservative choice in 2012! Zero will finally be exposed for the incompetent that he is if he has to face Newt in 3 debates.
Dream Ticket:
Newt - Palin 2012
Retread zot.
Which one?
I’m so happy you stayed awake to watch his interview!
Your link is dead bang accurate. Romney is a murderous, abortion-supporting pig, from his Mama on down!
Santorum would be a good VP pick for Newt
Yes! Newt hit all the issues out of the park. He’s the best candidate and our best hope to save and restore our Republic.
I was also pleased to learn that Michael Reagan is supporting Newt! So much for the “Newt is not like Reagan” and the “Newt said the Reagan revolution is over” crowd. The GOP-E temporarily killed the Reagan Revolution: Newt just spoke the truth.
Newt is our Reagan Revolution restored and revitalized!
“Go, Newtron bomb! Drill, baby, drill!!”
Yes!!!
SYL, Jim!!
Newt has a WSJ column today. It’ll get posted.
Mrs.ThurstonHowell was the retread troll.
Newt - Palin 2012
I would go for anything with Palin in the combo except Romney and Ron Paul (although I wish he wasn’t a nut. His economic stuff is at least interesting).
Heavy Zot action lately.
This is the fifth one today, a record for me. We’re being overrun, but Jim and the mods are catching them as they go.
There's even several with older sign-up dates.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K.
You had me at “Keanu.”
Uh, I mean, yes. There have been a lot of 10-year FReepers biting the 440V line these days. They flame out in a blaze of gory guts. A lot of them retread too, which is an instant hanging offense.
Yes, Newt needs money - I’m continuing to send money to him. We have a debate on January 7 on ABC, and January 8 on NBC. Newt should get a rise in his numbers with each one of those.
GOOD on you. I’ll send my first donation after the first of the year. Tough times here, but I have to participate financially in support of him.
Your fifth today? Oh my goodness. I’m going to track you to see what I’ve missed! LOL.
