U.S. Navy won't tolerate 'disruption' through Strait of Hormuz

(CNN) -- The U.S. Navy said Iran's threat to block the strategically and economically important Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable.

"The free flow of goods and services through the Strait of Hormuz is vital to regional and global prosperity," Navy 5th Fleet in Bahrain spokeswoman Cmdr. Amy Derrick Frost told reporters on Wednesday.

"Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated."

The 34-mile-wide shipping channel leads in and out of the Persian Gulf between Iran and Oman. It is strategically important because tankers carrying oil travel through it.

think we have enough ordinance to take care of this light work...

That's just the Iranian Navy.

While it doesn't have large vessels or submarines, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy is much larger, much nuttier, and more of a threat.

Did the Iranian threat to block the Strait come out of nowhere ?

They've been repeatedly threatening this for the last 30 years. Nothing new.

Hey Derrick....take a look at news ...the Turks are shelling the international sea boundary between Israel and Cyprus....which happens to be on top of a huge gas/oil deposit...
What you gonna do about that eh..?

Uhh...ummm...That's technically in the the 6th Fleet AOR. You will have to check with Commander, 6th Fleet...

Communicating policy to other countries is State Dept. Using diplomatic means to avoid war is State Dept.

The military is for breaking things. The military executes war, it does not declare war.

I’d fill a tanker with ballast rather than an oil cargo and use it as a low-tech minesweeper. It’s not elegant, but it worked before.

This assumption begs a thousand questions, but my first one would be,"Just how many mines were you planning to clear with the tanker?"...

Rightly or wrongly - the Iranians see photos like this and it absolutely makes them believe that the USA is a paper tiger. It may certainly could be a big miscalculation on their part, but I am quite sure they believe it.

America the Stupid is going to get checkmated real soon.

I agree. We’re a spoiled, complacent, ungrateful child who has taken it all for granted and not appreciated it or cared to do the up-keep, We’re in for an azz whipping, I’m afraid.

“he might over-react”

Not where Iran is concerned.

He will not kill a Muslim if at all possible.

This would be more convincing if it came from the White Hut, and not from the fleet.

You are right, the Fleet shouldn't had made that announcement. Usually it is up to the President or the State Department.

He would happily give orders to kill ten million of them if he thought it would help bring about the World Caliphate, and/ or help him to retain power long enough to finish his destruction of America.

Official stats from when I served on Nimitz and Eisenhower: displacement 98000 tons, length 1098 feet, width (at widest point of flight deck) 253 feet, speed in excess of 30 knots, used to be a complement of 80 aircraft back when the F-14 and A6 were in service, flight deck area about 4 1/2 acres, crew (with airwing) around 5000.

It’s a free market...I don’t deny anyone or any country from accumulating armaments for its defense, even Iran...

But...And thats a big Butt...

If you use it to get everyones panties in a wad, don’t blame others for sending your investment (as in this case) to the bottom of the sea...

I have a high degree of confidense in the on-scene commanders that have ROE that gives them the ability without too much NCA involvement the ability to immediately defend their commands with any means necessary...

In the case of Iran closing the International waterways...That is going to require Obama, or some other coalition partner in the area to make a decision...

Someone said yesterday, and I agree with them on this, that Europe needs the Straights open more than we do...

So it will be interesting to see who puts the big boy pants on and goes to the dance...
