BEIT SHEMESH, Israel The latest battleground in Israels struggle over religious extremism covers little more than a square mile of this Jewish city situated between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and it has the unexpected public face of a blond, bespectacled second-grade girl.
She is Naama Margolese, 8, the daughter of American immigrants who are observant modern Orthodox Jews. An Israeli weekend television program told the story of how Naama had become terrified of walking to her elementary school here after ultra-Orthodox men spit on her, insulted her and called her a prostitute because her modest dress did not adhere exactly to their more rigorous dress code.
The country was outraged. Naamas picture has appeared on the front pages of all the major Israeli newspapers. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted Sunday that Israel is a democratic, Western, liberal state and pledged that the public sphere in Israel will be open and safe for all, there have been days of confrontation at focal points of friction here.
Ultra-Orthodox men and boys from the most stringent sects have hurled rocks and eggs at the police and journalists, shouting Nazis at the security forces and assailing female reporters with epithets like shikse, a derogatory Yiddish term for a non-Jewish woman or girl, and whore.

I can't believe in anything 100%. Even the most concrete physical “laws” are likely only be true within the filter of our own minds. What we vehemently believe is true is probably not so in objective “reality”.
There is probably no “solution” and the deeper you dive into physics and objective reality research, the more you realize how little we know. All the words in our human languages would probably explain nothing.
I can't say I don't believe in God but I will never accept an 800,000 word book written in an ancient language and then altered by man for millenia as absolute truth. Even if all the secrets of the universe were suddenly transferred to someones mind today, they would not have the language to express it.
Did you not say your were Catholic and that no one has the “authority” to micro manage your life? Again, are you told what to eat on Fridays?
You are misquoting me.
I am happy to follow the Church dietary rules.
Depends on how zealously they disagree.
The confusion that is modern physics cannot nullify the historical continuity and logical precision of Catholic theology. Objective truth does exist outside the minds of human observers and can be understood through sufficient prayer and study. The Devil exists and has used Kantian subjectivism to cloud the minds of modern men.
How are people who disagree with the persecution part of the problem?
I told you: it depends on how zealously they disagree. Are they speaking out... or throwing rocks?
Adult men hurling rocks, spitting on the faces of, and throwing eggs on girls as young as 8 - all classic examples of civilised behaviour for you?
I bet these animals don't have stoning punishments prescribed in their books... /s
It’s funny that a “divine authority” is so incompetent in conveying that “authoritative truth” without ambiguity - the fatal flaw in all prophet-based religions - where the ‘prophet’ has to be believed in before the god of such ‘prophets’ can be. After all, how can a nutter have faith in Allah if he does not believe a mere man, and a paedophile, Muhammad, first? Faith in the prophet is more important than the faith in his god - because these false gods use human middlemen mouthpieces...
I don’t defend these idiots.
I do note:
1. If she was a in an arab neighborhood, she would be dead, raped, and/or kidnapped. This would not, however, be newsworthy. Only Jewish folk behaving badly is news.
2. It is other Orthodox Jewish people who are putting a stop to these fanatics -— a direct contrast to how muslims behave, where the looniest rule.
3. The actions of this particular groupd of Haredi are not backed by a sound reading of the Torah or any generally-accepted Rabbinical authority — again, a direct contrast to the koran, the four corners of which contain text directly to this effect.
Glad you are happy to follow the Church “rules”. I am sure others are happy to follow their Church “rules” as well. You are outraged that people follow their “rules” of how to dress, but you are happy to follow the Church “rules” on your dietary consumption.
Got it.
Mas Cerveza is a re-tread zotted Roman Catholic of the Mel Gibson kill-the-Joooos variety who spams every Israel or Jewish-related thread with various degrees of psuedo nazi silliness.
I’m curious what his/her screen name used to be.
That's a good point... although I notice that most religionists start out trying to convince me that there is a God. I think the plan is to first get their foot in the door, so to speak, and then convince me that their particular prophet is the kindest, or most believable. I guess the logic is that once you've convinced someone to believe in one thing, you can sell them add-ons more easily.

Marketing 101, this is how HP sells their printers, they sell them cheap with ink cratridges that are 1/4 the way full, but the ink refills are the expensive part and in the end cost you many times the price of the printer.
No it can't, no it hasn't.
You seem to be arguing for lukewarmness, no matter what the religion.
I'm not arguing for anything, just observing that others are as convinced of the validity of their own faith as you are.
So, because you are lukewarmneither hot nor coldI am about to spit you out of my mouth. Revelation 3:16
Gee, how will I ever sleep tonight?
Amen to that, brother!
Yes! It was 1984, middle of the winter, and my only means of transportation was a Honda motorcycle. I rode several miles to the closest Catholic church, just to be stopped at the door by a priest who did not consider my clothing "modest". Guess what? It would have been much more immodest if I had worn a dress, and the helmet on my left hand made it very clear how I had got there. Needless to say that was the last time I set foot in that church!
