Americans won't be seeing a huge ticker-tape parade in New York City anytime soon for troops returning from Iraq.
It's not clear if veterans of the nine-year campaign will ever enjoy the grand, flag-waving, red-white-and-blue homecoming that the nation's fighting men and women received after World War II and the Gulf War.
Officials in New York and Washington say they would be happy to help stage a big celebration, but Pentagon officials say they haven't been asked to plan one.
Most welcome-homes have been smaller-scale: hugs from families at military posts across the country, a somber commemoration by President Barack Obama at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
With tens of thousands of U.S. troops still fighting a bloody war in Afghanistan, anything that looks like a big victory celebration could be seen as unseemly and premature, some say.
Then and Now More Multimedia "It's going to be a bit awkward to be celebrating too much, given how much there is going on and how much there will be going on in Afghanistan," said Don Mrozek, a military history professor at Kansas State University.

FUBO!!!! FULP!!!!
I guess we should have expected this no?
No Code Pinko’s?
I left a few comments at the site and lit up one fool over there.
I wouldn’t want to be accused of triumphalism.
I think we owe it to praise the service of these people, regardless of the feelings of others.
the obamites would rather let the troops go unthanked than run the risk of creating a “mission accomplished” moment that they would have to deal with during before the election.
Don’t the bases honor returning troops? Ft. Lewis in WA does. Then too so does Everett when ships return from deployment.
Isn’t it enough that their presumptive CIC already had a couple of photo-op, spike-the-football moments at their expense and offered them his weary, “Welcome home?”
Instead of — or in addition to — “welcome home,” a worthy Commander in Chief would say truly and sincerely “JOB WELL DONE.”
This is what our troops know about themselves but need to hear from the Chief. They are proud, strong men and women, not victims of anyone or anything, including PTSD, which the media loves to play up. As one Chaplain said, media tries to portray that troops have been “ruined” by their service. They have not, by and large, he said been ruined even if they have PTSD, but are strong and resilient.
JOB WELL DONE to one and all who have served. You have my everlasting respect, gratitude and admiration.
A lot of the guys who won this war are already out of uniform and looking for jobs and health care.
I expect this from the communist sleeper cell neo-marxist in the WH
Yes the military honors soldiers, but most of the welcome home crowds you see honoring the troops are their family and friends. I think the point of the parades is for civilians to welcome them home and offer some sort of thanks from a greatful nation. Most civilians couldn’t care less about the military, and that includes many that consider themselves to be conservative.
But libs will bust their hump to facilitate a gay pride parade or an OWS spectacle.
I think that wars since WWII were not popular, no clear victory or America’s enemies vanquished like in War2. Most welcome Home, Thanks For Your Service parades are done on Veteran’s Day.
All these wars seem popular enough with the folks at home when the troops are first sent off to fight. Problem is the public has no staying power and soon tires of supporting the war or the troops fighting it. Wars are purely political especially most of the recent ones. Our military does not choose when and where to fight- people we elect do that, so we need to be far more careful who we elect if the wars we fight are not popular with we the people.
Veteran’s Day has for the most part become a day of furniture sales, and folks enjoying a day off to do as they please. Very few use that day or any other to honor our Veterans.
Or troops deserve a parade every day! But Iraq is going down the tubes but we won’t hear much about that will we. What a disgrace Obama brings with every move he makes.
I’ve been to many Veteran’s Day parades. As far as I know, no military family has ever shopped stores for Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day or 4th of July sales. They boycott them.
He is a neo-marxist sleeper cell potus all on to himself.
There are groups such as the Patriot Guard Riders and other Veteran groups that have staged welcome homes for our troops when requested or aware of homecoming schedules.
Counting on this current Federal Government to do anything good for the military is a waste of time.
So, they did all that was left to do. Call everyone home that was just there holding security, thump their chests that they ended the war that was already won, and hope it all goes to hell in a handbasket afterward. Just so they could say "see told you so," later.
