MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Three U.S. citizens were among those killed when gunmen attacked buses in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, said a U.S. State Department official said on Saturday.
The three were traveling for the holidays when they and several other passengers on the bus were killed by gunmen on Thursday, according to the U.S. official and local media.
The incident was one of several that day in which gunmen attacked busses in the eastern state, a major oil export hub that has lately become a flashpoint for drug gang violence.
On Friday, the tortured bodies of 10 people were found in northern Veracruz, local media reported, as attacks in the region intensify between the Zetas gang and Gulf drug cartels.

My brother-in-law is from Honduras and used to vacation there with my sister and their kids. I've gone with them a few times but they now refuse to go back there again because it's become so dangerous.
While drugs are on the rise there, kidnappings and protection rackets are rampant.......

RightGeek ~ Somehow I don't find that too reassuring. Is there a map of the free-fire zones?
I have a cousin who spent most of her life in Latin America, she was running a charcoal plant in semi-rural Mexico, off of the beaten path, away from drug corridors.
She ended up having to leave rather quickly for "health" reasons, and mourns the loss of her house, all of her worldly possessions that wouldn't fit in a couple suitcases, and most of all her dogs.
She doesn't feel it is safe enough for her to mount a rescue operation for her dogs.
She's not one to panic, she spent years living in Columbia...
Sadly, it's turned into a cesspool. I also remember when border towns like Tijuana and Juarez were cheap, good times for American travelers. Veracruz has been off-limits for a while now.
I guess I'll give kudos to the drug lords for keeping the violence, more or less, south of the border. I can still travel the streets of Chula Vista or Imperial Beach safely. Hopefully, it stays that way, for a while anyways.
If you want to know what the drug violence in Mexico looks like, google "chainsaw execution" and don't say I didn't warn you. And the next time you put a bong to your lips or snort a line up your nose, think of those two guys. They paid a pretty high price.
...Still, probably safer than E. St. Louis though...
I grew up in Southern California. Mexico never held any allure for me, but I do know that lots of folks used to like to shop and play there.
Even as a kid, though, we understood that Mexico wasn't the safest of places. But in today's world, you have to wonder what sort of fool would risk their life for anything across that border.

My question too. Complicity in murder flows all the way to the 1/2 white house.
What they hey? We got the Mexican and U.S. governments and tourist folks telling us how safe Mexico is. We should believe them until the evidence . . . uhm . . .proves . . . er . . . otherwise. Never mind.
Mexico is a large country? Who knew?
Exactly! That was my question. Did Obama provide the guns for these murders also?
I personally wouldn't go down into Mexico if ya took me in a complimentary, fully stocked Lear jet.
He's not smart enough to know, the cartels ship worldwide, and now control about 40 percent of the Mexican government...Not to mention some of the big cruise lines too. How many U.S. politicians are on their payroll?
I'd bet a whole lot of them.
You are failing to follow the discussion of how some areas are different from others. Imagine that!
Oh yeah, I forgot about Mexico’s great safe vacation spots, that you go to. lol..
We used to go salt water fishing in Mexico years ago, when it was safe and fun. You couldn’t force me at gun point to cross that border today.
If you have any liberal friends or relatives, an excellent Winter Solstice present might be a prepaid bus trip vacation to sunny and warm (sometimes really hot) Meheco. Rates are sooooo looooow now. You can save by buying only a one way bus ticket, the return can be by cheaper freight. If that is beyond your budget, Food Stamp President or Slow Joe bobble head Chia pets are an excellent choice.

Once there was an America that would have sent troop sout of the border over this sort of thing. A real TR might have done so—and not the limp -wristed Metro-sexual we have as president now. Mexico is alot closer and more of a danger to us than Iran or Iraq.
