Breaking: Deal near on payroll tax cut extension?
Hot Air ^ | December 22,2011 | ED MORRISSEY

Posted on 12/22/2011 9:31:30 AM PST by Hojczyk

Ed Henry of Fox News has been tweeting about the rumors:

President basically told Boehner, if you pass two-month extension Democrats will move forward on talks over one-year deal …

This is big morning in this story: now have the outline of a deal; if Boehner passes two-month extend, Reid appoints conferees on 1-yr deal

Update: It’s being widely reported that Boehner tried to get Obama to reopen negotiations, but ended up with a refusal:

“The speaker explained his concern that flaws in the Senate-passed bill will be unworkable for many small business job creators,” an aide to the Ohio Republican said. “The president declined the speaker’s offer.”

According to the White House, Obama repeated on the phone call his belief that the “only viable option currently on the table” to prevent a tax increase for 160 million American workers is the Senate-passed, two-month extension. But Obama pledged to work with the House on a full-year extension once the Senate package is approved.

This deal is mostly a face-saving maneuver. The only real concession is that Reid will agree to use the conference committee process rather than demand identical passage, which has some significance, but not whole lot. It means that the GOP still have to agree to the shorter-term extension and negotiate for the one-year extension, which is precisely what was going to happen anyway.

“mostly a face-saving maneuver”

The temporary 2 month bill is paid for entirely by increasing government revenue. No spending cuts.

Yeah, you can’t more “face saving” than that for RINOs...

The president and the senate want to get those mortgage fees into law.

How about we pay for a two month extension with a cut to a bureau or agency instead of screwing the people!

Boehner already said no. The latest rumor is a 90 day extension.

Why is it that, whenever I see the word “deal” in the same phrase/clause/sentence as any activity of the federal government, I feel as if cold, wet sea-weed were trailing down my back?

...if you pass two-month extension Democrats will move forward on talks over one-year deal.

Why not do the one year deal right now? The Senate will pass it.

Boehner is a Moron, the pubics in the Senate are worse. The only way for Obama to win is to create a series of artificial crisis to make the pubbies look mean so he can play calss warfare.

Of course they are stupid enough to be a foil for Obozo. Then they want to put Romney up as the candidate.....

To stupid for words.

“The Republicans usually do as they’re told.”

“I won.”

“Sit in the back of the bus.”

WHAT DO THEY HAVE ON YOU, McCONNELL, CORNYN, McCAIN, GRAHAM, BOEHNER? Do you think we do not know you are turncoats? They are traitors. YOU are running away.

Romney—Run away.

Amazing that these people want us on our knees and call themselves Americans.

Unfathomable how the GOP can lose the narrative, a what, 40 or 200 dollar temporary tax cut that experts say cannot be implemented or a one year over 1,000.00 dollar tax cut !?

How can you fail !? It`s a no-brainer and so easy to frame argument, “ Hey Obama the Grinch only wants to give you 40 bucks of your money back to you. We want a thousand dollar deal.”

It`s bizarroo world gone nuts times two.

My original prediction was that Boehner will cave and pass this extension with Pelosi votes. Now with the Senate passing a ‘bi-partision’ bill which Boehner appeared to have signed onto at the time the handwriting is on the wall for another 'cave' after a symbolic stand against it. Like this article says, it's a face-saving scam ‘deal’ for House Republicans to swallow what they said they wouldnt.

If nothing else House Republicans should a demand a fix to the part of the bill that causes the tax collection problems in two months or they will be helping Obama lay yet ANOTHER trap for themselves. The last congress helping pass the FICA/SS cut a year ago is what set this trap that Republicans appear NOT to be able to get out of.
