Hard to believe this is not deliberate sabotage of the American electric grid.
For that same period of time, the Norfolk and Western Railway, and it’s successor Norfolk Southern, has been delivering trainloads of coal to the Glen Lyn Plant.
Railroad and mining jobs will be lost as well as business who depend on those workers for their livelihood, but Obama has already demonstrated his disdain for the real people that make this country work.
I wonder if those union railroaders and miners realize how their union bosses sold them out.
Every plant operator in every state should refuse to shut down the plants.

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce its first-ever standards for mercury and other toxic emissions from power plants today, capping a longtime debate over a rule that Republicans and some utilities have decried and environmental and health groups have hailed.
The agency said in a statement it was planning to make a “significant Clean Air Act announcement” this afternoon featuring Administrator Lisa Jackson. Stakeholders such as environmentalists say they’re virtually certain the EPA will be unveiling the long-anticipated Mercury and Air Toxics Standards for power plants, also known as the Utility MACT rule.
The EPA confirmed it had finalized the rule in accordance with a court deadline for Dec. 16. The Utility MACT rule will require a roughly 90 percent cut in mercury emissions from generating units at more than 500 power plants running on coal and oil. The plants also will have to cut other toxic emissions such as acid gases and arsenic.
Congress first tasked the EPA with considering toxic air pollutants in the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. The agency has said until now it has acted on that directive for every source of the emissions except power plants.
Environmental groups, lauding the agency for finally addressing the issue, have said cited EPA data in saying the rule would save 17,000 lives a year and reduce serious diseases. And environmentalists in Texas have noted the state’s power plants lead the nation in emissions of mercury, a metal that can cause birth defects and neurological problems. People usually ingest it when they eat seafood containing it.
Republicans in Congress, however, have alleged the Obama EPA didn’t adequately assess how the rule would affect electric-grid reliability. Some utilities have said they will have no choice but to shutter some of their power plants — which the rule’s critics say could threaten reliability and cause blackouts.
The EPA puts the cost of the rule at more than $10 billion a year — a point that Republican critics have pointed out in criticizing the rule as an example of regulatory overreach. But the EPA says the health benefits of the rule would exceed the costs by anywhere from five- to 13-fold. The agency also has rejected the notion its air rules would cause blackouts, saying they’ve never done so in 40 years.

Same in our county. 40 years ago this county was firmly held in an economic stranglehold by the CHICKEN MEN and their CHICKEN CATCHERS. You worked for their starvation wages or you didn’t work.
Then on the East side of the county, a Mom & Pop 5&10 store bought some bankrupt Ben Franklin stores, branched out and became WALMART.
37 years ago, on the West side of the county, a 550 MW coal fired power plant was being built, and brought prosperity, and BROKE the stranglehold of the chicken men.
The enviros prophecied gloom and doom for our area. Instead, the plant property has the largest bass in the area, the forest areas are deer factories pumping out deer like you would not believe. And prosperity has hit this area like a ton of bricks!
Now we have a large supply of Bald Eagles winter here every winter.
So now the enviros are trying to get new air regulations to hamstring the plant. this is in Arkansas where the man responsible for the plant (John Turk) said he would never build another plant in Arkansas because of the tough air standards.
Now the coal fired John Turk plant is being built east of Texarkana..
I sure hope that a Republican president elected in 2012, working with Republicans in Congress, can pass legislation to get rid of inane rules such as forcing power plants to shut down. And, in general, rein in the EPA. How is it that the EPA has so much power? Aren’t cabinet level agencies such as EPA under the oversight of Congress and the President? How is it that EPA became a power unto itself?????
Here in NC, Buck Steam plant which is right down the road from me is being shutdown. Duke power is building a natural gas fired plant on the same property. Duke tried to raise rates 17% but have backed down to 7% after public outcry. Of course, most of the public is too stupid to realize why their rates are skyrocketting, prefering to blame it all on Duke CEOs. Duke is coincidently also guaranteeing something like $10 million for the DNC in Charlotte.

If I recall correctly, these new regulations include ever decreasing carbon emissions caps.
