Slipping in polls under an onslaught of attacks, Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich promises to wage a sharper and more aggressive campaign in the final two weeks before Iowa kicks off the party's nominating race.
Gingrich says he will be quicker to respond to attacks and more agile in getting his message across to voters who may have lost faith in him after rivals launched a withering barrage of criticism of his past as a Washington insider.
A 44-stop bus tour in the run-up to the January 3 Iowa caucus, daily calls with supporters to respond to new criticisms and another round of television ads will be cornerstones of the response by Gingrich, who will focus most of his efforts in Iowa for the next two weeks.
"I think a certain amount of drop in polls was to be expected given the amount of negative campaigning that has been going on," said Linda Upmeyer, the Iowa House Republican leader and the state chairwoman of Gingrich's campaign.
"But there are a lot of people out there who have not made up their minds yet," she said. "The challenge is to make sure that people have accurate information, and to get them the facts as quickly as we can."
The question for Gingrich will be whether he has enough time to rebound in the two weeks left to campaign in Iowa or if he has begun a political free-fall that will be hard to stop.
"The problem is he has probably waited too long," said Craig Robinson, former political director for the Iowa Republican Party. "This is the frantic finish. The clock might run out on him."

Ann Coulter wants Chris Christie to be president some day. That is the only reason that I can think of for her to abandon all her principles and get behind Romney.
I can forgive her for hating Gingrich. The man has a 40 year public history, and there is a lot to disagree with (btw, "Global Warming" is not a big one with her). I just wish she would tone it down a bit. For her sake. If he does win the nomination, she will have zero credibility, and might as well take a four month vacation at the end of next year.
GO NEWT! Kick Mitts butt. Tell it like it is with Mitt trying to have it both ways. Mitt is nice when the camera is on but his surrogate PAC is doing the dirty campaigning with Mitt trying to be above the fray. I believe that is being two face.
The MSM is conveniently forgetting that winning Iowa was never part of the Gingrich strategy. He was always going hardest after SC. Two weeks ago, he became the frontrunner, and said he was "Six weeks ahead of where [he] thought he'd be." Then Ron Paul, who has zero chance of winning the nomination, spent his huge war chest attacking Ginrich in Iowa, and Gingrich fell back into the pack there. And this is supposed to be some huge setback.
The story there is that Paul is conceeding the nomination to Romeny, and attacking his competitors, so that he can stay relevant and preach his idiotic message for as long as possible.
Exactly!
Sorry, her comments on supporting Paul are too far out there for me. No forgiving the shrill shill on my part. Newt taught geography and history. He has studied both for years.
It is a fact that the earths climate has changed over eons...it always will. I am not blaming man for it but even I know history shows changes in land, continents and species.
Keep in mind that Gingrich has been asked about this repeatedly for a decade now. His position has always been that "We don't know what is causing it."
Personally, I don't know what to think. I believe that there are some problems with how scientists are currently measuring the planet's temperature versus even 50 years ago. If they say that CO2 levels are going up, based on ice core samples, I can accept that with the caution that we know that research HAS been falsified for political agendas. And we also know that any increase in CO2 should be taken care of by increase green plant activity. And we don't really know that the types of increases people are talking about have any real effect on global temperatures.
In short, I'm with Newt on this one: Ignoring scientific research jest because we don't agree with the researchers politically is stupid. There may or may not be something going on, but we need to know a lot more.
The only poll he has “slipped” in has been Iowa, all other polls still have him beating Mitt by double digits. The MSM sure wants Romney to win it don’t they?
Bottom line is that opposition to neither global warming nor an individual health care mandate started out as some kind of core, biblical, conservative principle. Over time the movement has more or less found a consensus on them, but it is reasonable to assume that a thinking individual would mull them over and study them for a while before drawing final conclusions. There is no reason to doubt that Newt will stick to what his stated positions on those issues are in the campaign when he is elected into office.
Anyone who buys into that sh** even a little, needs to have their heads examined.
"He's cuckoo." (x12)
Personally, I think the Pelosi thing was a calculated mistake. Gingrich knew that independants viewed him as the ultimate inflexible conservative, and he was trying to soften his image. Note that he has always opposed government solutions to enviornmental issues. What he was talking about was governmental incentives for the free markets. And even then, he now admits that it photo op was a HUGE mistake. This seems to have been one of major mistakes that his detractors can come up with over a 40 year period. Personally, its one I can live with opposite the fact that he balanced the budget, got rid of welfare, and handed the Republicans a House majority most people thought could never happen.
Others will have to make their own decision, but repeately attacking the only candidate with a realistic chance to beat Romney (at the moment anyway) is the height of stupidity.
And there is no reason to have ANY confidence that Mitt Romney will do likewise.
Is this a pictures of FReeprs in general or this thread in particular - shooting each other down while Obama watches and waits smiling patiently in the wings?
I don’t think we’ve seen an answer from Huck to your question as to whom he’s supporting. That’s funny.
Yep, this is pretty much it. It's called healthy disagreement and it proves that, contrary to the elites in Washington, the right wing is not marching in lockstep like liberals. For the most part though, we put aside the differences and get our sh!t together when it's necessary.
As for Barry sitting back and watching, let's hope so.
Good. Newt needs to start fighting back hard. Just because he promised a clean campaign doesn’t mean he shouldn’t defend himself against attacks. All he has to do is speak and voters respond positively. He’s been too silent the past week. The polls that are based on LV tend to favor Newt and he can move up in the polls again if he keeps challenging Romney.
