Slumping Gingrich promises sharper counter-punch
Reuters ^ | Tue Dec 20, 2011 | Mark Felsenthal

Slipping in polls under an onslaught of attacks, Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich promises to wage a sharper and more aggressive campaign in the final two weeks before Iowa kicks off the party's nominating race.

Gingrich says he will be quicker to respond to attacks and more agile in getting his message across to voters who may have lost faith in him after rivals launched a withering barrage of criticism of his past as a Washington insider.

A 44-stop bus tour in the run-up to the January 3 Iowa caucus, daily calls with supporters to respond to new criticisms and another round of television ads will be cornerstones of the response by Gingrich, who will focus most of his efforts in Iowa for the next two weeks.

"I think a certain amount of drop in polls was to be expected given the amount of negative campaigning that has been going on," said Linda Upmeyer, the Iowa House Republican leader and the state chairwoman of Gingrich's campaign.

"But there are a lot of people out there who have not made up their minds yet," she said. "The challenge is to make sure that people have accurate information, and to get them the facts as quickly as we can."

The question for Gingrich will be whether he has enough time to rebound in the two weeks left to campaign in Iowa or if he has begun a political free-fall that will be hard to stop.

"The problem is he has probably waited too long," said Craig Robinson, former political director for the Iowa Republican Party. "This is the frantic finish. The clock might run out on him."

“....I respect the fact that you disagree... and I will not make unkind remarks because you do disagree....”

That’s a great statement, LLS.

Wish we all would.

The demslobs are laughing their asses off over the bickering out here.

They hate us all equally at the end of the day. We shouldn’t help them do their job by ripping at each other.

They’re the enemy, not us.

I've never voted for Ron Paul. In my view, he's not fit for national office. If I were to vote for him this year, it'd be a first, and it'd be a simple protest. But even then, he'd probably lose out to Bugs Bunny (meaning I'd rather write in Bugs).

So, that means you are the one who is full of crap.

I want someone to ask poor little Newt about his upcoming global warming book. His co authors are promoting it but I don’t believe I’ve heard him mention it even once.

I'm not aware of any upcoming book. Are you referring to "Contract With The Earth," which was published in 2007, two years before the East Anglia University scandal?

Have you read it? Do you know what's in there?

This conservative is still voting for Newt...the only Republican in the field who has any business thinking they have what it takes to run a country.

While others will scream about the media and talking points, I'll provide some actual facts in Newt's own words.

Gingrich Frontline interview

"I think if you have mandatory carbon caps combined with a trading system, much like we did with sulfur, and if you have a tax-incentive program for investing in the solutions, that there's a package there that's very, very good. And frankly, it's something I would strongly support." he said.

He then went on to criticize Bush for backing off the pledge.

"If he had instituted a regime that combined three things I just said -- mandatory caps, a trading system inside the caps, as we have with clean air, and a tax incentive to be able to invest in the new technology and to be able to produce the new technology -- I think we would be much better off than we are in the current situation," Gingrich said.

Two months later, Gingrich took part in a debate with Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts about environmental matters. Gingrich was slightly less gung-ho about cap and trade than he had been on PBS, but his message of "urgent need for action" on environmental dangers was clear.

"We should address it and we should address it very actively," he said in the debate, citing a UN report documenting the earth’s rising temperatures. "The … consensus is that humans have contributed to that. I don't think there's any consensus that we are the only contribution, but there is a clear agreement that human activity has helped increase the level of warmness."

“The problem is simple: If not Newt, who? The bench is empty”

As plain as that.

OK, I'm done playing 20 questions with you. Believe it or not, I can't keep track of where every joker on this website is hiding his cards. So tell me: Which candidate ARE you supporting?

If you are supporting none, and attacking Mitt Romney's competition, you are effectively supporting Mitt Romney.

Before the East Anglia info became public? So five years ago...

I’m talking about his book tentatively titled “Environmental entrepreneurs” Written by Newt Gingrich, Terry Maple, and Katherine Hayhoe. Maple says the book is due out early in 2013.

Gingrich Frontline interview

Perhaps you should actually read the interview before quoting it. In it, Gingrich reiterates his opposition to Cap & Trade. The quote you are providing is based on a hypothetical. The questioner was asking about Cap & Trade as compared to CAFE standards, and Gingrich was picking what he saw as the lesser of two evils.

He is a progressive liar to be exact. Actually... he flips so often you have to check his position daily to be certain.

So now we're dealing with a book that NOBODY has read yet, and probably isn't even finished. What we have is a title. Is see nothing wrong there.

Do you have a problem with free market solutions then?

I am not going to tell you not to. All that I can do is warn from my perspective... and hey if I am wrong... fine... but I am convinced that newt is bad medicine... and my biggest concern is that I do not trust him.

Newtie certainly did much good with the "Contract with America".

Is he a Conservative? Apparently NOT.

TEA Party adherent/supporter? Don't think so.

Lets take a look at the environmental entrepreneurs and what they've done for America so far. There's Solyndra, they did real well for themselves didn't they. The Chevy Volt has been a rousing success. And how bout that wind energy.

The simple fact is, that no matter how desperate you are to hide these things, the media will be leaking details of the new book when its most effective for them to do so.

BTW why don't you take a look at Maple and Hayhoe to see what kind of people the co authors are.

The examples you are referring to are specifically NOT free market solutions.

Have you read the book? do you know the globe has warmed over many years? that is a fact. Not due to humans but the climate does change and will continue to change.. creating islands that never existed...you do also know about the ice age? and entire continents covered with ice and uninhabited? you do know that the United Kingdom was under ice at one time?

The liberals are the ones with the greenie groups that are even impacting the UN...Newt said conservatives should have a voice at the table. He also said he will abolish the epa and have other solutions through technology and science..it is called progress.

I just decided that I was going to moderate myself and become less abrasive when engaged in debate. It accomplishes nothing and when we have to rebuild this republic... and IMHO there is no way around the fact that a few minor tweaks will NEVER fix things... we are going to have to turn back 100 years of progressive cancer to save America. Some of these FReepers are going to be there working shoulder to shoulder in fighting our domestic and foreign enemies while returning this great Republic to her rightful world leadership position. Real FReepers are never enemies... we can differ and those differences should be debated and argued but we don't have to use long knives. It will never stop altogether as emotions sometimes overrule civility... but let cooler heads prevail.

Now when it comes to obama and the nazicrats... I WANT TOTAL ALL OUT VICTORY AND I WANT TO DESTROY ALL DIM CANDIDATES AND BATHE IN THE WAILING OF THEIR WOMEN AND THE LAMENTATIONS OF THEIR CHILDREN.
