Rick Perry making modest gains in Iowa
Boston Herald ^ | December 20, 2011 | Dave Montgomery

Posted on 12/20/2011 7:20:23 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

..Fueled by a bigger pile of campaign donations than most of his rivals, Perry is blitzing Iowa in a 42-town bus tour that enables him to personally deliver his campaign message and capitalize on his skills at retail politics. Team Perry is also saturating the state with radio and TV ads and plans to import hundreds of Texans, including Republican state officials and pro-Perry lawmakers, to woo caucus-goers.

"We’re certainly hearing his name a lot with radio and TV commercials, probably a lot more than the other candidates," said Dr. Bill Davidson of Bettendorf in eastern Iowa. "I like the commercials, particularly the one about his not being afraid to speak about his faith."

Davidson said last week that he is undecided but is likely to vote for Perry or former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

"Those are my two guys," he said. "It may come right down to caucus day."

Craig Robinson, a former political director for the Iowa Republican Party, said that Perry’s wall-to-wall campaigning appears to be giving him a bit of a boost. "I think people are starting to give him a second look," said Robinson, who is founder and editor-in-chief of The Iowa Republican, a political website. "His bus tour is good for him, and I think it will help him."

...In one silver-lining aspect in his fall from the top, Perry has escaped the harsh scrutiny that falls on front-runners, giving him more freedom to promote key themes. Robinson said a fellow Republican who approached him at a recent political event told him that he initially supported Perry, then switched his allegiance to Gingrich and is now back to supporting the Texas governor.

Why should we try to convince you otherwise.

Better to let you stew in your own juices.

It’s not where you start out on the journey that counts, it’s where you end up.

You’ve convinced yourself that others are the problem, and specifically one candidate is the problem and those who support him.

It can’t be you.

We get it.

I can’t believe so many here favor BIG-government Washington lobbyist Newt over limited govt Perry.

I know that. But you sounded as tho you were considering Perry but concerned about some of his positions.

Perry probably has more tv ads going than anyone right now. But I think they’re showing mostly in Iowa and the early voting states.

Or, if you have any questions about any of Rick Perry’s positions, you don’t need to go to the website.

CW knows everything and will be glad to enlighten you.

Why should anyone bother to ‘get back to you.’

You are set on believing a series of lies and seem happy with that, so go vote for who you want to.

That last sentence was funny.

True, but still funny.

Heads just exploded in a lot of places...

Newt is openly for amnesty so we do know his plan. Bachmann is strongly against amnesty.

Perry needs to do better job in communicating, especially since this is crucial issue and his position unclear to many voters. Vague promises, like securing border are meaningless. I don’t live in IA or NH so I haven’t seen any ads.

>>Perry peaking at the perfect time for the presidential pick. (Don’t you love the alliteration) :-)<<

Why stop short when you can have it all?

Presidential pick Perry peaking perfectly.

Of course, saying it 5 times quickly is a problem....

I’m convinced that Perry wants to get control of the border and will do so if he’s elected President.

However, he also has to walk a fairly fine line on the issue to avoid losing the votes of the Hispanic population that is in this country legally. So far, I think he’s shown himself capable of doing that, and it’s reflected in the support he gets from Hispanic voters in the little bit of polling I’ve seen.

If he discusses the illegal issue in Sean Hannity terms, the “send them all back” crowd will love him, but he’ll lose massive ground among Hispanic voters who’ve lived here legally for years.

Yes. Perry doesn’t lead with his chin. He’s an executive and he knows how to get the job done.

Given his poll numbers, I would say he failed in his balancing. This just enforces the impression he is not serious about enforcement.

I don’t care for Mr. Perry but I did meet his wife on a jetbridge in Austin. If she were running it might be more stunning.

I believe he’s serious about enforcement, but is framing his border policy in a way that doesn’t ensure that he loses the Hispanic vote. Politicians in the Southwest have a little better appreciation of the need to do so than elsewhere in the country.

Don’t underestimate the damage legal Hispanics can do to the Republican cause if the “Send them all back regardless” message is all they hear out of our candidates.

LoL. I wish. I just was told by my daughter that my 4 year old grandson thinks I know everything about dinosaurs and if she needs to know to ask me. I try.

The border between Texas and Mexico is the Rio Grande.

I know that you know that’s a river, but apparently some folks around here don’t. I’d like them to explain to me how you build a fence down the middle of a river.

When Perry attacks the government or now Wall Street as being the cause of problems, he's capable of being very clear. On the other hand, when he starts pushing visa programs for illegal immigrants to come and go across our borders freely, things get a little hazy and confusing

Would you care to fill us in on exactly what Rick Perry has said to indicate that he’s pushing visas for illegals to come and go across the border?

I believe you have him mixed up with Newt Gingrich.
