Given his poll numbers, I would say he failed in his balancing. This just enforces the impression he is not serious about enforcement.
I believe he’s serious about enforcement, but is framing his border policy in a way that doesn’t ensure that he loses the Hispanic vote. Politicians in the Southwest have a little better appreciation of the need to do so than elsewhere in the country.
Don’t underestimate the damage legal Hispanics can do to the Republican cause if the “Send them all back regardless” message is all they hear out of our candidates.
