(CNN) -- A Louisiana lawmaker wants the National Guard to patrol the streets of New Orleans after a toddler who was four days shy of her second birthday was shot and killed in a drive-by.
"She was out here as a innocent bystander. She's dead now," said Rufus Ruck, the child's cousin.
Keira Holmes Gordon was gunned down in a double shooting at the B. W. Cooper Housing development on Sunday. She was one of two people hit when gunmen from two separate cars opened fire on a man who was standing nearby.
According to police, the man ran into a crowded courtyard full of kids trying to escape the barrage of bullets. He was hit several times but survived the shooting.
The toddler was pronounced dead at the scene. She would have turned 2 on Thursday.
State lawmaker Austin Badon Jr., who represents part of Orleans Parish, said crime is spiraling out of control and wants the government to step and help control the violence.

Who doesn't?
In the ‘age of Obama’ it wouldn’t surprise me to see troops ‘protecting’ the streets(to be charged with crimes later for ‘protecting’ the streets)...oh and citizens can be arrested without warrant, held indefinitely for such crimes as ‘being belligerant’...
Only in the ‘age of Obama’.
My thoughts exactly. It takes one city to request this and then more will follow. IMHO.
Public housing?
Where da PoPo?
This is Pandora’s box. Allowing this sets the wheels in motion for an oligarchical dictatorship.
It’s coming, folks, and MUCH sooner than anyone thinks.
The Black Caucus should go down there and address the situation.
To be honest, rarestia, I’ve been waiting for it. Something like this has been in the back of my brain for some time. I figured it would be closer to the election but perhaps it takes time. If one city does this.... it won’t be long before other ones do it. The media will report how “citizens feel safer” and there will be photos of kids playing “in the streets again”. I pray I am wrong. I truly WANT to be wrong.
Hershey, PA?
The French quarter, every morning, smells of stale beer, vomit, & bleach. Enjoy your breakfast! The rest of the city is just slowly rotting. Another big storm surge will finish it off.
Save your tourist dollars unless you just want to experience a drunken, violent slum.
That’s a great solution. What happens when the military calls in close air support to stop a mugging? Maybe we can use artillery to cut down on the shoplifting.
Besides being unconstitutional, it’s a very bad idea. The military is trained and equipped to deal with problems by blowing things up and killing people. It’s not really a good solution for domestic crime problems.
This posturing and national reporting begs many questions. Exactly, why does he not trust the Chocolate City Cops to deal with the problem? Who was he trying to impress? Would it be news if there were no agenda at CNN? Is this a News Story because this “lawmaker” is a whistle blower or because CNN wants Holder’s people in charge?
military patrols
unbelevable
In Chocolate City, the po-po is probably out shooting somebody else. The NOPD (at least in the past) hasn’t been much more than the Crips or Bloods with uniforms and lightbars on their cars...one of the most corrupt and least effective big-city police forces in the country.

Chicago, Philadelphia and other cities are in a state of siege. The absolute disrespect for human life puts everyone at risk and most of all our precious freedom. We are seeing crimes we never could fathom decades ago. Child murders, rapes, mowing down innocents in neighborhoods without a thought about consequences. What changed things? The legalization of abortion. No respect before or after birth. No God in the lives of the young brings a poison into society that kills any chance of normalcy. Some cities are gone. Pity the poor that do not have the means to get out.
They allowed the projects to be reoccupied by the same kind of individuals who made them hazardous before Katrina. What do they expect?
Yet.
It's public housing project the Black Caucus should patrol the streets
