Bob Dole endorses Romney for Republican nominee
Reuters ^ | Dec 18, 2011

Republican elder statesman and former Senate leader Bob Dole on Sunday endorsed Mitt Romney to be the Republican presidential nominee, a day after the former Massachusetts governor received the backing of Iowa's main newspaper.

In an open letter to Iowa voters, Dole - himself a former presidential candidate - said a great deal was at stake on January 3, when Iowa votes in the first nominating contest for the 2012 presidential election.

"A number of my friends are currently candidates seeking the GOP nomination. But the time has now come for us to decide who among them can defeat Barack Obama in 2012. I've made my decision, and I believe our best hope lies in Governor Mitt Romney," Dole wrote.

"As President, Mitt Romney will succeed in turning this country around," he wrote. "He rescued a flailing Winter Olympics when it was mired in financial scandal. He was an exceptional Governor of Massachusetts, who managed to both balance the state's budget and cut taxes while dealing with an overwhelmingly Democratic state legislature."

Though Dole's endorsement is not much of a surprise this election cycle, he went a different route in 2008 when Romney made his first bid for the nomination. Four years ago Romney got in some hot water when he said that Dole - who had written a letter supporting eventual Republican nominee Senator John McCain - was the last person he would want a letter from.

Dole was Senate majority leader at the same time that Newt Gingrich - one of Romney's main rivals in the quest to unseat Obama - was speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

But the two Republican congressional leaders were often at loggerheads,

What do you expect — one RINO endorsing another one.

When I think of Dole I think of the VIAGRA commercial — that’s all he was good for.

Bob Dole was/is a war hero and deserves some respect.

What does his military record have to do with him being one of the worst Republican Presidential candidates in my lifetime?

That is...up until the time that other war hero, John McCain, took the prize.

Bob Dole has my utmost respect for his service in WWII.

However, I would not allow him to pilot a helicopter while I was a passenger.

The same holds true for allowing him to choose our next presidential candidate.

Neither have anything to do with my respect for his wartime actions and everything to do with his competence for the task at hand.

Groan. The Republican Party may go the way of the party it replaced - the Whigs.

Well, Iowa is not the end all, nor New Hampshire, nor South Carolina. Florida is the big one. But Florida is not the end all either. I am hitting my knees for Newt Gingrich every night. If Obama wins again - we are finished as the republic which was founded around 200 years ago.

Thanks presidio9. As two-time loser, Bob Dole sez:
"As President, Mitt Romney will succeed in turning this country around," he wrote. "He rescued a flailing Winter Olympics when it was mired in financial scandal. He was an exceptional Governor of Massachusetts, who managed to both balance the state's budget and cut taxes while dealing with an overwhelmingly Democratic state legislature."
Despite Romney's and Dole's best efforts, the next President won't have to deal with an overwhelmingly Democratic Congress.

Thank you so much. Keep praying because you are right; if given 4 more years, Obama and the atheistic, Marxist, Liberals will destroy this great nation.

What the world needs is a debate between Bob Dole and John McCain. Wouldn’t that be exciting?

The kiss of death. From a nice WWII veterean, a nice man but very warmed over national election loser— ie. a really “old political bull”. This endorsement will actually cost Romney votes.

Dole is also Mr. Ethanol subsidies (and best friend to the criminal company known as Archer Daniels Midland) and is/was no conservative, except only comparatively.

Well, Dole did manage to carry Indiana, Virginia and North Carolina. Something Juan McCain failed to do.
