WASHINGTON House Speaker John Boehner says he opposes a Senate-approved bill extending a payroll tax cut and jobless benefits for just two months and wants congressional bargainers to write a new measure that would last an entire year.
The Ohio Republican said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the Senate's two-month bill would be "kicking the can down the road." He mentioned items in the House version of the bill that were not in the Senate legislation, including restrictions on Obama administration curbs on industrial pollution.
Boehner's comments came a day after the Senate easily approved a compromise payroll tax cut bill. But in a conference call among House Republicans later Saturday, many complained bitterly about the $33 billion Senate bill, saying it lacked serious spending cuts.
Yes, that is indeed the point.
It nearly requires this to be pointed out.
Give a copy to all your friends for Xmas. Send it to Ipad?
Mitchy and bonehead quietly stashed NEW taTaxes in the bill on all real estate transactions!
How many other taxes increases were quietly
Snuck in?
They financed Obamacare TOO !
These two lobbyist stooges are disaster and will lose the House at this rate!
That may be, but it makes a world of difference politically. The 'rats created SS, over the years refer to it as your nest egg, sends you letters showing how much you've accumulated, during campaigns calls it things like "locked box", and pummels republicans on it. It's time to call out this "payroll tax cut" for what it is - a 'rat-created disaster designed to fail and go bankrupt so that they could roll out more totalitarian-socialist solutions that helps them retain power.
THEY ARE TRYING HARD NOT TO DISCUSS THE PRIMARY ISSUE.
THIS MUST BE PAID FOR.
This payroll tax cut, this time last year, was pure stimulus. Extending it is neutral stimulus-wise, but negative deficit-wise. IT MUST BE PAID FOR WITH OTHER SPENDING CUTS. That would be de-stimulative and cut Obama’s election chances.
One other thing . . . if they do not PAY FOR THIS . . . the debt ceiling that was designed for February 2013 expiration will move up. Maybe months. I do not think they have factored that in. The debt ceiling calculations presumed this thing expired properly.
Taxes are just a shell game, they’ll reduce them there, and increase them over there.
This is an unjust tax cut. It has Obama’s name on it. People who live on Social Security or invested retirement funds will get no tax cut, even though most retired people have suffered large cuts in income. Only those on payrolls will get it.
So, why is Boner a hero for trying to push Obama’s half of the bill and extending it? It’s nothing but more stupid Boner tricks, helping Obama get whatever he wants. Probably he’s ready to cave on putting the pipeline through, too.
You know all taxes go into the general fund, right? And from the general fund there is not enough money to fund anything Congress has created. We are a debt based economy.
Agree, he’s a total sell out, crybaby, sissy.
Because the lowest 50% (in income) of taxpayers don't pay income taxes. Reducing income taxes won't benefit them at all.
For the lowest 50%, the payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) are the only federal taxes they pay, aside from federal excise taxes.
Now that you understand the distinction, you can easily figure out why Obama and the rest of Democrats want to reduce the payroll tax "temporarily".
But, since Social Security is already paying more benefits than it receives in payroll taxes, this makes the situation worse. So, more money must be drawn from the "general fund", which is funded by income taxes.
See above for who pays income taxes. So, reducing the payroll tax is nothing more than another form of "soak the rich".
“Unless ozero is intentionally trying to bankrupt us, that is.”

Unless? I have never doubted it.
In may seem success at the moment, but be certain, in the end, Boehner will screw conservatives. I am under no illusion that there will be the slightest move towards Liberty. He throws crumbs to placate the foolish.
Boehner is a true enemy of our Constitution. The total sum of his actions is proof that he worships at the alter of State Power.
If Obama gets his “payroll tax cut” extended for the full year, he will tell Americans that HE, the all-wonderful and benevolent one, has put more money into their pockets despite stiff resistance from the Republicans who hate the middle class but love the rich and the oil companies.
It’s pure election year politics, and will do nothing to stimulate job creation or the economy. The whole thing is designed to get votes, pure and simple.
“This is not going to help the narrative that “Boehner caved”.”
Only because there was a big Republican Tea Party uprising in Congress. Boehner was quite happy with the deal until the uprising.
Upon further review, you are correct.
At least it was stopped.
Limbaugh is right, conservatives have to replace the GOP establishment. It’s going to take more than one or two elections.
Boehner needs to be replaced with a True Conservative. Mr. Ryan step up to the plate and be House Speaker! No payroll tax extension and no extension on unemployment benefits!!!
“Limbaugh is right, conservatives have to replace the GOP establishment. Its going to take more than one or two elections.”
We need to burn them out at the grassroots level. We need to watch very carefully who is taking the K Street and Wall Street payola. Why do you think many GOPers in even heavily Republican districts are not having town halls now? The answer is because they are afraid of us.
The Senate version also gives more funding for abortion here and abroad.
“Its pure election year politics, and will do nothing to stimulate job creation or the economy. The whole thing is designed to get votes, pure and simple.”
Exactly. Where the GOP is failing miserably is playing all these small ball games with Barry and letting him lead them from one “crisis” to the next. It totally lets the dims off the hook from the fact that they have no serious overall plan for the economy. No budget, trillion dollar deficits, union payoffs, etc.
We need to spotlight their refusal to govern responsibly but McConnell and Boehner are so busy tip toeing to 2012 that it never gets publicized.
