Gov. Rick Perry is double-dipping, drawing retirement income from the state in addition to his salary as governor since late January, newly released records show.

Perry's move to begin drawing from his pension early this year while remaining governor, which his staff says is legal and consistent with state retirement rules, was unknown to the public until federal financial disclosures were made public on Friday. ... Combined, his net pay from the state is now more than $225,000 annually.

I’m not sure what ‘significantly less’ for 2009 and 2010 might be, but that’s an extremely generous figure for 2008.

But Perry actually earned the money they're giving, Romney inherited it all.

Ahhhh, so now we get down to the crux of it all. Romney's charities mean nothing because he came from wealth but Perry's charities do because he didn't come from wealth.........got it!

The classic liberal class warfare argument..........

Perry gives his own money, not his family’s money.

So I guess everyone who served in the Military, firemen, police officers, school teachers, postal workers, they are are parasites?

Public school teachers are all parasites because school education is not necessary. Postal workers are parasites too. As for firemen and cops, while the functions are necessary, voluntary fire service has worked more efficiently. The police force has descended into a parasitical system where they cite the law about certifications while they watch a man drown. The explanation these union member cops give is that they need more money.

I will ignore your adamant claim that anyone who opposes government is a Communist and an opponent of Wall Street. BTW, Rick Perry was for Wall Street bailout and Hillaycare.

So Perry is donating to the mansion restoration from his own pocket, thereby relieving some burden to the taxpayers from his own wallet?

What a jerk! /s

Paying politicians peanuts is a surefire way to increase corruption in government. For they’ll be looking for money to live on... and business has money that they want to spend to get governmental protections for themselves as well as governmental interference in their competition.

So you’d end up with politicians even more firmly in the pockets of corporations.

How could it not be known to the public? It’s a public thing, and it was a public filing to start collecting the pension.

Is this the paper admitting that it failed to report public news in a timely fashion?

Of course, “news” is a bit of a misnomer in this case, it’s not news when people start collecting their legally earned pension benefits. Unless that person is a conservative I guess, then liberals will attack them for their compensation.

No. I just don’t think that politicians need to take vows of poverty

The stench here is nearly unbearable.

The idea that people can be compelled to work for free is what is laughable.

I’ll let you figure out the possible unintended consequences of such legislation and why people might still be willing to spend millions to get a legislative seat that barely pays enough for a cup of coffee.

When you get to retirement age, I’m sure you will take whatever pension you have earned during your many years of work.

If he had a defined-contribution 401K, would you insist he not take any of the money until he stopped working? Retirement plans are part of the employment contract, and if you don’t like it, don’t offer them and just pay people enough to buy their own retirement.

I’m happy to support pension reform — but not to take away what people have already earned. You don’t change employment contracts retroactively, unless you are a liberal who thinks work is a bad thing and people don’t deserve the compensation they have earned.
