DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
Safety inspectors are on site of the Horseshoe Casino in downtown Cleveland. This after rescue crews were called Friday to Ontario and Prospect for a collapse near the Horseshoe Casino construction site.
According to officials with Rock Gaming LLC the collapse happened across from Higbee building, on the site of the parking structure that is currently being erected.
The collapse happened around 3:00 PM. There were 22 workers below when the floor with tons of steel, iron, and concrete, came crashing down above them.
"They were pouring the concrete in the second floor and there was a collapse," Lt. Larry Gray, Cleveland Fire.
A head count has been taken, everyone was accounted for and officials say it does not appear that anybody is injured.
Officials say the strength of rebar is what saved the day. Rebar, the steel inside the concrete which strengthens the concrete, was there to prevent the falling concrete from crushing the workers below.
An investigation is underway to find out what caused the floor to give in.
Rock Gaming released the following statement soon after the incident:
There was a construction incident on the site of the Horseshoe Cleveland parking structure, located at Prospect and Ontario Streets in downtown Cleveland, at approximately 3:30 p.m. today. The second level of the parking deck collapsed as concrete was being poured. Fortunately no workers were injured. The site has been secured and our investigation into the cause of the incident will start immediately.
Good thing there weren't any non-union workers there or they would be all dead!
LOL anybody ask about who the morons were that built the apparently shoddy structure?
Maybe they should work harder so the buildings don’t fall down?
I'd bet it was some of those strong union laborers but he didn't talk about them.
Is this how unions ‘negotiate’?
Miracle nobody got hurt.
Are you questioning the actions of those heroic union workers now? LOL
Good old union labor quality!
PAH
So THAT'S what rebar is for! I was always under the impression that it was there to carry the tensile loads because concrete is weak in tension. Silly me.
Amen to that. That union Rep that said that had to be an idiot.
I'm sure there wasn't a 6.0 on the Richter scale earthquake, just what did he think caused the collapse. :)
Products from China no doubt.
In case anyone thinks this is accurate, it is not.
That is some reporter's interpretation of what was told to him.
"It'd be a shame if anybody was to get hurt."
"A real shame."
In this case, probably not.
I've been on enough construction sites to know that the construction company didn't brace the forms correctly.
Even if it was Chinese steel, that still wouldn't have entered the equation until after the concrete was cured and the forms were stripped.
Casino parking structure.
Kinda unlucky, don’t ya think ?
Wonder if this is an Indian casino. If it is built on tribal trust land, the tribes make the building codes, and often they are much laxer than city or county codes.
???? CLEVELAND...
See how lucky we are to have college-edumacated journalists to keep us properly informed?
It'd really be interesting to hear this reporters description of fly ash.
Cleveland, Union, Casino. My household earwigs could connect these dots and proffer the correct analysis.
With help from the silverfish :)
