It has been a terrible week for Newt, a very good week for Mitt, and a week of surprising momentum for the two Ricks.
The Washington Examiner, the center-right alternative to the Washington Post and Politico which is staffed by the best of center-right journalists and pundits, endorsed Mitt Romney. About Newt the editors said "[H]e is like an exploding cigar, waiting to be lit."
The National Review narrowed the field to Romney, Santorum or Huntsman. (Santorum's "moneybomb" had a good first day for the "little engine that could" among the campaigns.") About Newt, the NR editors opined: "We fear that to nominate former Speaker Newt Gingrich, the frontrunner in the polls, would be to blow this opportunity [to beat Obama]."
Gingrich's campaign momentum was thrown into reverse and the poll numbers began to fall after Monday's spectacular train wreck of an outburst that unleashed Charles Krauthammer, Brit Hume, Jonah Goldberg and George Will in a four-pundit-horsemen-of-political-apocalypse fury on the former Speaker. Mark Steyn and Ann Coulter are still on the sidelines yelling "put me in coach," which I will do with Steyn in the show's first segment today.

Hugh Hewitt has been campaigning for Romney for 5 or 6 years now.
Hugh has been a Mitt-bot for a long time. No surprise here. But I disagree that it has been a terrible week for Newt. The entire media (left and right) is actively engaged in trying to select our candidate. Not gonna work.
What a load of crap this is!
Here is something I just posted on another thread...it seems
right for this thread as well.
Newt is a true master of the debating arts but he is in the same position now as a chess master who is pitted against the latest super computer programmed to play chess.
He is pitted not against a single opponent but against the combined intellect of everyone scheming to bring him down. This is the same thing the chess master faces, he is pitted against all the chess players who have programmed his opponent.
Newt stands against all the following...each contributing their bit of muscle to the effort to destroy him.
-His opponents on the stage.
-The moderators and their staff
-The RINO silk-panty republican establishment.
These are all busily working to create a gotcha moment for Newt tonight. Thats a lot of brains squaring off against Newt! If he can withstand all that combined he truly is the best man for the job.
(It is possible that the debate questions will be known to Romney ahead of time. If Newt ever faces Zero in debate it is a certainty that his opponent will be given the questions.)
They are turning into a bunch of circus clowns.
I guess they make a ton of cash off of us, and then they think they can just lead us around like dogs.
Good analogy.
I fear he’s right though.
Newt’s starting to falter just in time for Romney to have another brief lead, except this time, there won’t be enough time for Santorum, Perry, Bachmann, or, if we absolutely frickin’ had to, Ron Paul, to take the lead...so Romney wins simply by being the last man standing.
Hey Hugh, who are you planning to vote for?
Mitt Obama or Barack Romney?
Hugh Hewitt and Michael Medvid, hammered out of the same Oort cloud about a light year from the warmest sweet spot of Conservatism.
Go Newt! Go Paul! (A Doctor / Doctor ticket in 2012!)
Well that is up to “conservative” voters.
If Iowa voters want to be idiots, then by all means let them demo it. If they dont have a spine to stick with someone, then it is fair to say their is nothing at the top end of the spinal column.
Taht being said all the Republican infighting has-along with other factors-guaranteed the reelection of "The Divine One."
Shut up, Hewitt. I’ll pick my own candidate, if you don’t mind.
So sick of all the punditry this week. All the establishment and their gang-ups. Doesn’t even seem to matter what the American people actually want anymore.
I hope Newt does some serious knee capping tonight of Romney. Go for his throat, Newt. And Paul’s, too.
F them all.
That being said all the Republican infighting has-along with other factors-guaranteed the reelection of "The Divine One."
Save Newt from what? High poll numbers?
Is Hugh Hewitt a Mormon? Romney lover? On the payroll? All of the above?
Like I’ve said all along, all the correct people do NOT like Newt, which makes me like him more.
Rock the Debate, Newt !
Why the hell is Iowa so frickin’ important, anyway?
I’ve long supported a single, nationwide primary, or, a series of about 3 or 4 “Super Tuesdays” and that’s it, where clusters of states go the same day.
It would save a lot of grief and money, not to mention, the need to rely on a few ethanol-subsidized Iowa farmers to make our decisons for us.
I don’t necessarily dislike people sharing their political wisdom with me. A good starting point is to have some before they begin to share.
The only time they can say Mitt has had “a good week” is when the media has been going after somebody else.
Mitt’s constant 20something% is not momentum. He needs all his money and organization just to maintain it.
The media template on Newt is this:
Any and all criticisms are welcome and will be amplified to depict Newt as immoral, unethical, unstable, corrupt and unelectable. Until Newt is destroyed, his opponents will receive no media scutiny whatsoever.
And if Newt responds to cricitism, he will be depicted as thin-skinned and conducting a negative campaign.
Following in the great tradition of destroying Bork, Palin, Cain. . . the media is confident they have Newt in a box and they think there’s nothing he can do to fight back successfully. They are circling like vultures eager for the kill.
And the beneficiary of all this is Romney, a bag of mush with a dismal electoral history and the charisma of an undertaker.
All if fair in politics, I guess, but if we’re left with Romney the undertaker, there will be two funerals: one for the Republican establishment and the other for America.
