That is a good idea. The poor and malnourished 99% should each receive a free ‘hen’.
Walmart was "fine" until they started getting into the traditionally unionized grocery business. Suddenly the unions and the competing stores stuck with union contracts turned against them. I have no idea why discount stores like Wal-Mart generally have non-unionized and relatively short term employees, while groceries have longer term employees and are usually unionized, but when Wal-Mart crossed that line the long knives came out against them.
The picture isn't representative of what it looked like when the incident occurred.
Another article I read earlier explains it better: The parking lot was covered in snow, it was night, and cloudy, and the city lights reflected off the clouds. The open ground looked like water to the birds.
It didn't just happen at Wal-Mart. The birds crash-landed on highways, football fields, and open fields all around the area.
It’s been a while since we heard about the last mass bird death....
I’m betting they’ve still been occurring, but Big Media didn’t want to add any trouble for our “gutsy” president to handle.
THIS time, however, we’ve seen an immediate explanation for the phenomenon.
ALL SOLVED. Nothing to worry about here. Move along.
The birds of Wal-Mart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
People of Wal Mart are running out to parking lot now.
“Hurry up Cooter. They’s Christmas Goose dinners out thar!”
Maybe they all saw a 10.00 DVD player and thought it was Black Friday again?
Those poor British girls just aren’t too bright.
Actually, now that I think about it, one night some years ago my father (who had been a Marine F-4 pilot in Vietnam) and I were landing a Beechcraft twin engine at Portland and there was a thin veil of fog coming off the Columbia river.
At around 100 feet we had good visuals on the runway lights and took our eyes off the instruments. About 20 seconds later we slammed into the runway so hard I was surprised we didn’t break the landing gear: we had both fallen for an optical illusion that made us think we were 40 or 50 feet higher than we actually were.
I wonder if the light conditions caused the same type of problem for these birds.
From the picture, it looks like the bird should have had no problem whatsoever with the parking lot.
On the other hand though, looking at the [EVIL RETAILER WALMART/s] roof, it looks like a VERY inviting pond with, albeit weirdly regular pattern, nice cozy inviting lily pads and the like...
Grebe-—duck like criter. Ducks are dumb. A friend saw a hawk swoop down on a mama ducks ducklings. Pick them off one by one. Trying to save them....The mother duck made the same mistake with each duckling
...usually ground-effect in - I agree with you. Whatever the explanation, migrating birds record the landscape and thus show succeeding generations the way. This will be less likely to happen again since the “survivors” will “remember” not to land there; or perhaps may even have noted some dissimilarities between the parking lot and their preferred landing surfaces. Except for Democrats, humans often learn this way, too.
I’ve heard that before, with mergansers. What’s the difference between a fish duck and a regular one?
Hmm...did Les Nessman cover it live on WKRP?
Yes, dear, it was but nowadays I am trying to save Rick's Lone Star campaign... and it is taking all my effort!
News only because it was a non-union parking lot. Weather conditions and misjudgement are the cause of this “downing”. Grebes are perfectly capable of landing on the ground as well as water.
However, reporters usually need to be taken into the coop to prevent them from drowning in the rain.
Next destination...Boise State football field.
No they are not stupid by a long shot!
Heartbreaking....
