2:31 p.m. | Updated Mitt Romney is sharpening his warning to Republicans about the consequences of nominating Newt Gingrich, declaring in an interview on Wednesday: Zany is not what we need in a president.
Zany is great in a campaign. Its great on talk radio. Its great in print, it makes for fun reading, Mr. Romney told The New York Times. But in terms of a president, we need a leader, and a leader needs to be someone who can bring Americans together.
With 20 days before the voting begins at the Iowa caucuses, Mr. Romney is intensifying his forceful attack on the credibility of Mr. Gingrich, who has emerged as his leading rival in the Republican nominating fight. He has shed his year-long reluctance against doing interviews, hoping to change the narrative surrounding his candidacy before the holidays.

Newt should take the bait... He should laugh... It is just so over the top...
Mittens needs to be careful. “Zany” is hardly the word I’d use to describe Gingrich even when he’s getting something wrong. The main effect of the “accusation” is to soften Gingrich’s image with independents, and make Romney look silly to folks in general.
I’ll bet you $10,000 Mittens gets reamed for this here....

Yes, well it doesnt hurt for the president to be both...
“zany” and a leader...
Willie Mitty is neither...
Abraham Lincoln was “zany”
Ronald Reagan was “zany”
a little sense of humor in a man is called for during trying times...
Both men benefitted from their own personal brand of humor..
Willie Mitty was born without a funny bone...
So hes left with bitterness and envy at anyone who can laugh at himself and see the funny side of things...
Poor Wee Willie Mitty...
Better “Zany Newt” than “Moderate and Progressive Mitt”!
It was $45 Million of his own money in 2008...
And he still didnt get to buy the WH nor any zany...
This time it will be much more...
Ya gotta put in a real high bid if ya wanna get some zany when its auctioned there, Pilgrim...
Oh and John Wayne had lots of zany...
Ya Zany is pretty lame.. Not worth responding too.... I wonder if Romney knows some good “Your Momma” jokes...
Are we sure he’s not talking abuot PAul?
this actually makes me angry...
I think it will work for Newt if he stays cool. He seldom appears Zany to me in debates. Does he to you.
Can’t label, marginalize and discredit Newt as stupid, so they’re going with zany.
Sorry Mr. Timid you have been rejected
Milquetoast Mitt is getting increasingly desperate.
LOL. Say what you will about Mitt. At least he is not “zany.”
I saw that on Faux News this morning and just about fell out of my flipping chair. Even my dog wanted to know why I was laughing so hard. LMAO
THAT is a keeper.
Zany- what does that even mean? Mitt better get down with the lingo if he wants to land a punch.
We have it on DVR and must’ve reran it 5 times before we finally got tired of laughing.
On the last go-round, I started giggling “Waita minute! Waita minute! Lemme go get my camera!!!”
It was just too great to not save for ‘future use’.
Man, whoever pulled that one off is my hero.....;D
Haven’t heard the use of zany since “The Animaniacs” theme song
