Ron Paul, the once-forgotten presidential candidate, is picking up steam in Iowa and now appears poised to overtake frontrunner Newt Gingrich, according to a new survey released today from the left-leaning Public Policy Polling.
The poll finds support for Gingrich has slipped to 22%, with Ron Paul just behind with 21%. Mitt Romney trails in third place with 16%.
That's a five-point drop in favorability for Gingrich, who has raced to the top of the Republican presidential field over the past month. PPP found Gingrich's favorability numbers have fallen 19 points over the past week.
Meanwhile, support for Paul is on the rise, particularly among younger voters and voters who identify themselves as "new." Among likely caucus-goers under age 45, Paul leads Gingrich 30-16. The numbers are nearly flipped for caucus-goers over age 45.

Yep.
I never trust PPP polls.
The Paulbots did the same thing in '07 and '08 - spammed and manipulated polls and then wet themselves and ran around telling everyone Uncle Weirdo was going to be the nominee.
They are if nothing else, entertaining.
I am 36. i like RP cause of his “leave me the hell alone” attitude towards things.
My dad likes RP, Bachmann, and Huntsman.
newt & romney? YUCK!
“Nominating Ron Paul is just about the only way Republicans could blow this election.”
Amen. I would not vote for that nutcase under any circumstances.
Why settle for Newt or Romney? Both of them stink.
Bachmann or Ron Paul would get massive energy on our side.
Yep.
In reality, our foreign policies have been insane, not in Americas best interest, have looted the American treasure, put Americans in debt to Communist countries for generations, created anti-American trade polices, allowed for tens of millions from foreign nations to illegally invade our land etc.
These foreign policies have nearly left America dead on the floor.
Would you suggest, like Paul, that the reason we were attacked on 911 is because of our presence in the Middle East?
My suggestions were pretty damn clear in #26, which you completely evaded.
Look, people like who apparent think fighting compassionate wars for 12 years at a time is some great strategy, when in reality, along with *other* disastrous foreign policies, is draining the American treasure.
I hate newt and strongly dislike mitt.
My ideal candidates would also be RP and Huntsman.
Under no circumstances is he worse than the guy in there right now...
It is so surprising that there are Republicans who don’t want to borrow money from China to fight wars with Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, Libya, Egypt, Kosovo, Somalia, Argentina and places unknown?
RP will be over after IOWA.
Actually, quite the opposite. It's about the only way that Republicans can win it.
You can argue about the assets/liabilities of Ron Paul's policies -- and that's a separate issue -- but Ron Paul could get past the Republican nomination (meaning Repubs support him) there is no doubt in my mind that he we would beat Obama. I know of no other Republican candidate that generates the kind of enthusiasm that Ron Paul does -- on both sides of the aisle. His toughest audience are actually old Baby Boomer Republicans -- get past them, and he's home free.
Alternatively, those same Ron Paul voters are not going to vote for a Newt Gingrich at gunpoint -- and would probably sleep through a mindless Mitt Romney ballot. The potential crossover Dems for Paul will scurry right back to Obama. And I know that no one wants to hear it, but it's doubtful that there would be enough Repub votes left to eject the Obama from office if Ron Paul isn't the guy.
You bet...
These foreign policies for the past 20 years have been an utter disaster.
Huntsman was for cap and trade and the mandate.
Ron paul and Bachmann right now are my favs.
Bachmann is really awesome. She is like a hell cat on fire against the obamunist lately.
Bingo.
All we do here in Iowa is help sort the candidates. We don't pick them.
They just have to get out and do retail politics here; which I find very valuable.
Now there's a team. I like Bachmmann -- I think she is honest and loves her country, but I just don't think that she has the chops for the job yet, or really understands what it's going to take to root out the DC corruption. She needs seasoning. But I do think that her heart is in the right place.
And yet for all the money and time the candidates spend in Iowa it remains a blue state. I have nothing against Iowa being part of the process, but I am concerned about granting a blue state the first crack at “sorting” Republican candidates.
“Anything else?”
Yes - your candidate’s isolationist, delusional foreign policy will get us all killed in a world in which 7th century Barbarian Islamist fanatics are at war with us and will attack us anywhere we are, here or around the world. And not just us - anyone who is not a fanatical Muslim. Where the hell have you been in the past 10 years, under a rock? Ron Paul can’t win, will never win...there are some of us who don’t blame America and are sick of those who do. Our foreign policy has not always been perfect, but for the most part, we have been on the side of preserving freedom against communist or fascist regimes. Your attitude makes me sick - just like Obama apologizing to thug leaders around the world. A lot of good that’s done him.
