Today Newt Gingrich fired back at Mitt Romney's suggestion that he should return the money he earned consulting for Freddie Mac by condemning Romney's private equity career:
If Governor Romney would like to give back all the money he's earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years at Bain, then I would be glad to then listen to him. And I will bet you $10, not $10,000, that he won't take the offer.
Gingrich has basically adopted the language of the anti-corporate left with this line of attack. It may have some political resonance, although it's doubtful that

Newt is a life long Washington insider. He has good ideas but lacks the self discipline necessary to be an effective candidate or an effective President.
Newt should stop trying to curry favor with the MSM and stop talking about things he doesn't understand.
Instead he should pick a few topics he is knowledgeable about and work on them.
If the republicans supporting Romney would stop and think, it would be clear Obama is going to wage a fair-share-rich-people-are-bad campaign - and Romney and Bain will be his exhibit A. I don’t know if it will work on the republicans, but I can see it really firing up his base, and making things ugly.
The Newt haters are getting desperate.
Great tagline you have there.
Using government power to make money is not capitalism. The left would like us to believe it is.
“Actually, (and I am not by any means a Newt supporter), this was actually quite intelligent of Newt. It goes a long way of explaining the Myth of Myth Romney’s vaunted and empty business acumen.”
Bain Capital is a “pump and dump” outfit. If you wan to see analog of Bain, rent “Pretty Woman” and watch Richard Gere in action. The way Bain works, the whole isn’t worth as much as the sum of its parts. In other words, pump up the stock, sell it at a profit to a bunch of dumb shlubs, then close the company in bankruptcy and sell off the parts for a profit leaving a bunch of people unemployed and get paid for doing the dirty work at a hansom profit.
“It seems to me his comments were based on Romney’s competency rather than an attack on capitalism.”
That is exactly right. However that won’t stop the Republican establishment minions here on Free Republic from making their stupid comments.
Sheesh. He was simply making a logical comparison. He wasn’t attacking or pushing for it.
Newt is a liberal progressive republican. More importantly, he is an ego maniac.
BINGO!!
BINGO, II!!
Actually, he was attacking Gingrich for saying that politicians who took money from Freddie and Fannie should be thrown in jail, while Gingrich took $1.6 million to help them hook up with those politicians.
Like a guy taking money from junkies to help them find dealers, and then saying that the dealers should be thrown in jail.
And Gingrich’s response saying that laying people off at work is evil is humorous — didn’t Cain make Godfather’s profitable by laying off workers and shutting down franchises? When did that become evil? Does Gingrich think Cain should give back his salary from Godfather’s because of how he ran that business?
“Does Gingrich think Cain should give back his salary from Godfathers because of how he ran that business?”
Does anyone care? Get a grip. You’re over thinking it. He was telling him the same thing I would tell anyone...if it ain’t illegal and it ain’t hurting you, STFU.
I don’t want Newtron to be my Daddy...I want him to kick Obama’s ass and pass the type of legislation he’s always passed...and famous for...conservative. I don’t care what he did outside of his voting record as long as it was legal.
The donations F&F made to politicians weren’t illegal, but Gingrich said the politicians who got them should go to jail.
Should he be judged on his own standard? He took money from them to help them hook up with the political class. If he was worth his $1.6 million, he did an excellent job of making sure that congress wouldn’t pass laws that would impact the companies, and that’s how we ended up where we are today.
You can’t attack politicians for reacting to the work you did for a company, and not expect people to notice.
The author is correct that this was channeling of OWS Far Left drivel about awful corporations that bankrupt people and turn them out into the streets in the dead of winter with threadbare socks on their unshod feet.
Newt. Please.
Moreover, there is no political equivalence between working to do normal things (leveraged buyouts) in the business world and what Gingrich did, which was take millions of dollars in fees to build bridges to Capitol Hill Republicans and develop an argument on behalf of the companys public-private structure that would resonate with conservatives seeking to dismantle it.
As part of his relationship with Freddie, Gingrich also OPPOSED George Bush's 2005 efforts to strengthen regulation of these GSEs. Had Bush succeeded, the housing and subsequent economic crash might not have played out quite so badly. And maybe we would have never gotten a President Obama, either.
Nothing Mittens did worked against the conservative agenda or the nation. Gingrich's shilling for Freddie Mac did.
Newt certainly was unwise to attempt to equate his Freddie Mac consultancy with Mitt's private sector career.
“He took money from them to help them hook up with the political class.”
What documentation has EVER been brought forth to prove this? Any? None, huh? He was not a lobbyist. Period. And you have nothing but thin air or a lower cavity from which you could have pulled this assertion.
I thought so.
“Newt is a liberal progressive republican. More importantly, he is an ego maniac.”
Impressive diagnostic skills, Dr. You must be quite impressed with yourself to do such a thorough diagnosis with no knowledge of the patient other than what you’ve read in the MSM. An average professional wouldn’t even attempt it.
That is a bucket of crap. Newt was peddling his influence and lobbying off his political positions. Big difference to “capitalism”.
He's gone from dead at the gate to front runner status. Only a negatively biased viewer could call such a person an ineffective candidate.
>> Newt is a duplicitous snake in the grass who cant be trusted. He is a loose canon, and if the Pubs vote him into office, they will find that out in short order. Thats not even mentioning his obvious Napoleon complex. >>
That is some attack, demonstrating a lot of emotion and temper, very little fact, and an irrelevant personal opinion.
Care to actually add something intellectual and factual to your little rant? If not, go away.
