Tea Party Leaders: Rand Paul is Wrong on Newt Gingrich
US News and World Report ^ | 12/10/2011 | Mallie Jane Kim

Posted on 12/10/2011 10:11:49 AM PST by katiedidit1

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's media blitz bashing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as unworthy of Tea Party support isn't hitting its mark, at least not among leaders of the Tea Party Express, Tea Party Patriots, and Tea Party Nation.

"I want people to go out there and work for who they believe in," says Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer, who says she or any individual shouldn't dictate who people in the movement ought to vote for.

"These people are intelligent. They're not just sheeple that are following somebody," Kremer says, adding that Tea Partyers haven't coalesced behind one candidate yet. "They are looking at the issues; they're researching."

Pretty darned good analysis. Though if there was a way to search tagline history, I could prove I was part of the 3-5% that supported Newt many months ago.

Nevertheless, I respect people who support Bachman or Santorum. I can respect people who support RuPaul even - thought not all of them since many are obnoxious eccentrics.

What I DON’T respect are people who can’t look at a candidates achievements. abilities and faults and make a reasonable judgment wihthoug engaging in mindless vitriol against Newt. “He’s no better than Obama.” “He’s no different than Romney.”

It’s such mindless BS. Like Santorum better? Fine. From a strictly ideological point of view in many ways I do as well. Ditto for Bachman. Perry even - though it would be nice if he spoke English as a first language. But Newt has the street fighter’s temprament I want to see right now. And the intellect. Those things, coupled with his achievements and conservative core, make him my pick.

Hank

I know there were some of the 3-5% Newt supporters on FR - and if you were one of them, you did prove ahead of the curve on this issue. I predicted on October 21 that he would surge to the top, so I was ahead of the curve too, but behind you.

And I agree that ideologically I am more consistent with Bachmann or Santorum than I am with Newt - but I have decided to support Newt because of his effectiveness and ability to take the fight intellectually to the liberals better than anyone else. And I do so in spite of some of his foibles.

And I agree, calling him a RINO or saying he’s another McCain or Mitt or Obama is absolutely borderline retarded. There are plenty of intellectual battles to have over Newt, but folks who spout that are signaling their inability to engage in an intellectual pursuit.

Agree.

To hear people call Newt a conservative is very disappointing. He believes in government picking winners and losers. He believes in government doing great things. He is clear that he believes in a Hamiltonian view of the constitution. Most of all Newt believes that he is the One, not Obama, to bring us all the great things the government can do.

That’s right. These people running to the front of the parade hope to be the first ones recognized by the Big Government New Newt.

That’s BS. Give one statement by Rand that he thinks he’s the leader of the tea party.

Deficit? Where does he stand on the deficit? How much is he going to cut spending? Can you find one thing anywhere where he says he’s going to balance the budget? Anywhere?

From the Freddie Mac link you provided,

One of these small businesses, a consulting firm called The Gingrich Group, offered strategic advice on a wide variety of topics to a very wide range of clients. One of these clients was Freddie Mac.

What strategic advice did they get for their +$1.5 million?

stayed married to his wife,

Actually McCain got rid of his first wife. It was one of the ugliest divorces in the history of divorces. As an aside, she never came to the legal proceedings and the divorce was declared in her absence.

Agreed. At heart Newt Gingrich is an authoritarian with no regard whatsoever for the tenets of the Constitution. He has no conscience for the consequences of government action to the individual if it is deemed in the best interest of the masses.

Besides being terrible at executing a vision and having the temperament of a hypocritical spoiled brat. The idea of a TV Newt is fun and entertaining. The real thing I could never, ever support.

We are NOT sheeple. We think for ourselves and I can tell you that the vast majority of people in our Tea Party will not vote for Gingrich or Romney or Paul. We want a true Conservative.

Well said!!

Does his [Newt] laid out agenda not speak for itself?

No, not when you combine it with his history of flip-flops and surrenders and tone-deaf political maneuvers.

The question is: what are his core beliefs that he will not surrender. Other than believing that he should lead, I'm not sure he has any.

Prostitution and drugs? I don’t favor either of those things but I don’t hold it against Paul that he does.

Please post evidence for the claim that Rep. Paul favors either prostitution or drugs.

The list of things that I don't favor is a lot longer than the list of things I believe American citizens should be imprisoned for.

The man is seeking the highest office in the land.

He has said he wants to allow the states to decriminalize these things.

He said it on national television.

If he is personally against them, and has the power....why would he allow these things to be decriminalized?

Who the hell cares about his personal views at that point when the end result is the same as if he was FOR these things?

Because it is fundamentally wrong for the President to make decisions over what the states may, and may not, criminalize.

In what sense do you think the Constitution makes state laws subject to what the President may choose to "allow"??

So it’s like abortion. Politicians can SAY they are personally against it but never lift a damned finger to stop the slaughter.

What exactly do you think the President should do to stop the slaughter?

Chain himself to an abortion clinic door and try to block anyone from entering? That's something that any of us can do, we don't have to be elected to office.

Bear in mind that back before Roe, abortion was illegal by state law. It was not illegal because the President was opposed to it.

I am glad that I live in a country which is still at least partially a constitutional republic. We are not yet ruled entirely by Presidential decree. And regardless of the President's opinion about prostitution and drugs, his Constitutional authority does not extend to cover state law in those areas.
