JERUSALEM - Palestinian officials are reacting with dismay to Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich's statement that they are an "invented" people.
The Jewish Channel on Friday released excerpts of an interview in which the former House Speaker said Palestinians were not a people because - unlike Israelis - they never had a state.
"Remember, there was no Palestine as a state," Gingrich said. "It was part of the Ottoman Empire.
"I think we have invented the Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs and who are historically part of the Arab community, and they had a chance to go to many places, and for a variety of political reasons, we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s. It's tragic."
Palestinian official Nabil Abu Rdeneh on Saturday described Gingrich's comments as "unfortunate" and called him "ignorant".
The Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, demanded Gingrich "review history."
"From the beginning, our people have been determined to stay on their land," Fayyad said in comments carried by the Palestinian news agency Wafa. "This, certainly, is denying historical truths."

Gingrich has a Ph.D. in Modern European History from Tulane University. I believe he has reviewed quite a bit of history.

Spot on. And Arabs need to go back to Arabia, where they came from, and stop trying to take over the world. It's so ridiculous: They'd have you believe they've always been in Israel, always been in Constantinople, that they invented algebra, etc. All lies. The truth hurts, indeed. So refreshing to see someone of Newt's stature finally speaking it.
Gingrich's reasoning was popular in the decades following Israel's creation, although that argument has since fallen out of favor among mainstream Israelis.
Wasn't it also the case that many Jews were expelled from Arab countries at the same time?
And whether the argument is popular in Israel is irrelevant. Is it a fact or not? Could the "Palestinians" or the pro-Palestinian journalist who wrote the article, please cite the evidence to refute Gingrich's argument? Nope.

Lately most of it has been counterfactual.
Find a country or a people that isn't in some sense "invented." Look at a map of Britain or France or Germany or Italy or Spain a thousand years ago. Those countries were all formed over a long process and at the beginning it would have seemed ridiculous to believe that Burgundians and Gascons and Alsatians and Bretons would all come to be considered Frenchmen. Or consider Africa. Where did all those countries come from if not through some process that combined accident, will, and invention?
Wow, that’s funny. I read the article and headline and there was nothing in it about “ObamaCare”!

If the Palis were smart, they’d have continued calling themselves “Amalekites” as some of them did some years ago.
Demonstrating a historical connection might have been tough but at least the name would give them some reason to claim a presence in The Promised Land during Moses’ time.
The problem is not reviewing history. The problem is the Muslims rewriting history to deny Israel has ever been a Jewish state, Jerusalem ever being its capital, Jordan not being the Arab state created out of the Palestinian Mandate, which promised it all to the Jews for a homeland, and inventing a new nationality called Palestinians.
They conveniently want the world to forget they have tried four times to destroy the Jews and drive the Jews into the sea (1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973). They want the world to forget the Muslims were attacking Jews long before Israel became a nation.;
They want the world to forget that between 1948 and 1967, they held Jordanian citizenship, and that there was no Palestinian state created by the Arab states in the land they occupied as a result of the armistice.;
They want you to forget that the Palestinians in Jordan tried to overthrow the Jordanian king (Saudi Transplant)and establish a country names Palestine, but had their heads handed to them by the Jordanians.;
They would like all to forget that the people conquered in the past by Muslim armies had to die, convert, or submit (the meaning of Islam).;
They also want the world to forget that over 600 thousand Jews were expelled from the Arab Middle Eastern countries following the establishment of Israel in 1948, and that these Jews rather than being house in neighboring states in refugees camps, and used by the West as a political club against Arab states, resettled in Israel and elsewhere.;
They would also like to destroy the knowledge that the Arabs who left Israel in 1948 were not fleeing Israeli guns, but getting out of the way so their Arab armies could destroy the Jews, and then they could move back in and take Jewish property.;
Also, Iran would like to forget that they once had a Jewish Queen, and a religion other than Islam.That Persia was also conquered and subjected to forced conversion for all Persians who were not "People of the Book" (everyone but Christians and Jews).;
There are about a billion Muslims and approximately 12 million Jews in the world. Who is the Goliath, and who is the group trying to destroy and occupy? Not the Jews!
