Tea Party members get behind Gingrich

He has surged to the top of the polls, having been crowned the latest Tea Party favorite by the movement’s rank and file. Newt Gingrich’sappeal is not universal among Tea Party conservatives, but for now he is their anointed warrior, boosted by his string of fiery debate performances filled with irreverent quips.

As Gingrich courts the group that will be so crucial to his success in Iowa and beyond, Gallup’s latest poll of registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents has him winning 47 percent of voters nationally who say they support the Tea Party movement. (More than half of Republicans consider themselves Tea Party supporters.) A month ago, Gingrich garnered 18 percent of Tea Party support, behind Herman Cain and Mitt Romney.

“Obviously, he’s really kind of taken over among that group,’’ said Jeff Jones, the Gallup Poll’s managing editor. “They’ve been casting about, looking for someone who is a better fit for them than Romney is. It looks like everyone’s had their chance and basically squandered it, so that leaves Gingrich.’’

The Tea Party over here has drunk the Newt Kool-Aid, which is a bit disappointing.

have lost more respect for this movement in the last few days

Agreed. I'm lucky enough to have a friendly relationship with my congressman and have talked about this with him. He says the tea party drove him to victory then went back to sleep. Meanwhile the left was waiting for it to happen.

The occupy wall street clowns are dead wrong but at least they have the courage of their convictions.

If Tea Party is about fiscal discipline, Newt's not a bad choice. He's worked to balance the federal budget unlike anyone else running, his tax plan is deliberately not revenue neutral to ensure the beast can't be fed at the rate it demands even now, he has proposal for hundreds of billions in reform, restructure and replacement, he describes himself as a "cheap" hawk and has proposals to shift more responsibility back to the states and localities. He has a keen understanding of the nation's history, including its founding.

Since there's no formal Tea Party, and the movement has been twisted to mean all things to all users of the phrase, it may just be another sham populist uprising that will wither and self-defeat like Perot's Reform Party.

Instead of it being focused on fiscal sanity and limited constitutional federal gov't, it's hijacked into all kinds of other areas like social policy which dilutes and distracts from its focus.

My question about Newt is whether he'll be a focused and disciplined president. If he can achieve his potential, he could be pretty great. If he falls short, we could be mired and listless. No matter if it's a GOP president or four more of Obama (as is my belief) the critical election will be the Congress.

Why? You’ll be seeing gushing articles from the MSM, nonstop from now until the nomination is over.

I predicted this before, and so far everything you are seeing is correct.

No, because if I wanted to support Newt, I would have done so before...

I’m angry that Newt disrespected the Catholic church.

The author is just repeating yesterday's bullsh!t from jonah goldberg. He may get the vote of many TEA Party activists... but he is in no way TEA Party material.

Well put, the Tea Party hijackers dilute the message and the press jumps all over it like Bill Clinton on a pole stripper.

>>>>>>With some people running their jaw a little long against Gingrich...

We conservatives have a right to debate the pros and cons of the current field of candidates. Especially of a front-runner like Newt with a record of recent flip-flops on several high profile issues that can be legitimately called progressive tendencies.

I've been watching some FReepers defend and support Newt in the last week or so. All I can say is, when did you guys contract amnesia?

Newt went from being a hardcore back-bench bomb thrower for the GOP in the 80's, to a revolutionary in the 90's, to telling us that the Era of Reagan is over. If the Era of Reagan is over, the era of conservatism is over. I don't buy it. I don't buy what Newt is selling either.

Newt may be a great rhetorician, but he's also the ultimate WashDC/beltway insider. Not to mention a highly undisciplined and unprincipled individual. Newt has moderated his politics over the last decade morphing into what some call a situational conservative, what others call a cafeteria conservative, and on many issues he promotes expediency over principle.

In the end, Newt might be the last man standing choice for many conservatives. Fine. Lets not turn Gingrich into some type of conservative icon. Which he is not, never has been and never will be.

I would have to hold my nose to vote for Newt, much like I did when I voted for McCain.

I did too! But I realized that the garbage King Obama was selling was the same method snake salesmen in the old west would give from the back of wagons. He was fake as hell and smelt like a glamorous dead fish. McCain would not have sold out America as our King has.

Just a few days ago Newt said he wants to eliminate the EPA....and replace it with another agency. Nothing but a big government hack who talks a good game.

I will readily confess to not being knowledgable of what Newt said in this particular instance. So I would be quite happy for you to inform me on the particulars of this new agency Newt described.

The EPA has lost its way and become politically agenda driven. That does not mean that there is no legitimate role for the federal government to insure clean air and water. Being a conservative does not mean voting for dirty air and water. An agency dedicated to enforcing laws passed by congress based on the pricinpals embodied by the Contract with America would not be a bad thing and is not in and of itself an endorsement of big government.

Seems like projecting to me. In my view, Newt has not sealed the deal. Once the inevitable tearing down of Newt occurs over the next month, I wonder what we’ll be left with. Mittens and.....?

As both my first and second choice are no longer in the picture for the nomination, I’m willing to consider other conservatives. I think it’s going to boil down to: which one of the remaining candidates when the Virginia primary comes up is the closest to reflecting my own political views. And to hades with trying to handicap the horserace.

If Newt happens to survive and become the nominee, I would plan to vote for him in the general. But we’re nowhere near that point yet. And I probably won’t vote for him in the primary in any case; there are other candidates that I agree with more.

newt may win... but you are insane if you think that any of these candidates will create any excitement... most of us would not give any of them a second look if we had any other choices. I despise sis-boom-bah for someone that does not deserve it... and newt does NOT deserve it.

Originally, me too. However, after this process of elimination, we may be left with the choice: Newt or Mitt?

I’m not even going to bother wasting my time with someone who has their mind made up. If you really wanted to know, you would have simply gone looking for info on your own.

A good search term would be “Environmental Solutions Agency”

Being a little bit progressive is like being a little bit pregnant.

That is a most interesting vid.

21 minute long interview.

I would challange anyone to actually listen to the entire dialogue, then present here what exactly, in context, that they disagree upon, that she said.

That process hasn’t arrived yet.

I wasn’t one of the folks who thought Palin would run, btw. I have been in the Cain camp since May.

From what I’m hearing the chicago thug mafia was giving death threats to his grandbabies, and because he’s a good man, decided that protecting them was more important than being president of the united states.

If you want the thug mafia to win a round by choosing our candidates for us, then fine, vote for Newt. But I know where I stand.

newt promised to abolish 95 Federal Agencies in 1994... 95 of those still exist and 95 have seen their funding increase every year since 1994. Good intentions mean nothing... unless you are a dim.
