Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno had close business ties with board members of The Second Mile, the charity that his assistant, accused child molester Jerry Sandusky, allegedly used to recruit his victims, The Daily has learned.
Around the same time a graduate assistant allegedly approached Paterno in 2002 to say that he had witnessed Sandusky raping a boy in the locker room showers, Paterno and three fellow investors, including longtime Second Mile board chairman Robert Poole, had just secured financing to build a $125 million luxury retirement community, according to public records.
Paterno also was partners with this team on developing a golf resort and nearby restaurant and inn. He has also partnered with other current and former Second Mile board members on a bottled water company, a coaching website and a chain of convenience stores.
The Second Mile has said in a statement that Sandusky told the charity he was under investigation in 2008 and was immediately removed from programs involving children, although Sandusky didnt resign until last year. In an interview with The New York Times published Saturday, Sandusky said Paterno never confronted him about the accusations.
Officials at the charity would not specify who was notified. But some have questioned whether certain people within the charity knew before 2008, given Paternos close business and personal relationships including dinners and a Bahamas vacation with Poole and several other past and present board members.

This entire situation is sick, sad, & disturbing. Children's lives were destroyed to line the pockets of a few & appease the sexual whims of others. What's worse is that people seem to be A-ok with that.
Don’t forget to include the “Wife Swapping Studies” scholar Spanier, former Prez of the State Penn with his program to turn State College into Gay Valley.
I’m trying to think of a reason we need to know where Paterno invested his money. He was paid like a king to run the football program. What was he supposed to do with all that money? Sew it into his mattress?
Where’s the conflict of interest if he invested it in real estate?
the latest local stories about this reveal that Sandusky’s wife, much like Bernie Fine’s wife at Syracuse, knew that her husband was abusing young boys in their home and yet did nothing to stop it.
The stand by your man stuff really shows...in the end, it’s all about money isn’t it.
They were all in bed together on so many levels, and the fate of the boys was swept under the rug in order to preserve the Happy Valley illusion and carry on bu$iness as u$ual.
The grim fate of the boys just couldn’t hold a candle to all that corporate board bigshot high rolling.
I believe what the story is saying is that Joe knew what Sandusky was up to but kept quiet about it because they had money invested together.
Which would mean that Joe in essence allowed Sandusky to continue molesting boys to protect his investment.
At least that’s the way I read it.
Any other explanation begs credulity.
Um the conflict of interest is when your “investment” depends on you maintaining cover for illegal activity.
Sheesh. I never understand people who want to defend this situation. There’s more to the story, yet when the investigation is far from complete people still wanna right JoePa a pass.
Apparently there is absolutely no cure for a child molester. They will return; if not locked up.
It’s worth investigating Joe’s ties to the “Second Mile Foundation.” But you’re going to find a lot of the movers & shakers associated with Penn State and the local community were also on that board. To call that community “close knit” is an understatement. It’s positively claustrophobic.
Personally, I believe Castration would be the order for the day. It may not cure them but it would sure slow them down.
This is a smoking pile of an article filled with sideways implication and no substance.
This is a tragedy for the kids that were abused. Sandusky and any who knowingly allowed this to happen should pay the price; no question. But BS like this article is an effort to try the case by public opinion rather than facts.
Sure. Whatever you say.
IMHO, Paterno knew about this man’s behavior and did not want to confront it or what it would mean to the football prgram and his reputation.
I believe in essence the same is true of others who knew in the Atherletic Department and the school administration.
Nothing else explains why, after being told Sandusky was raping boys in the shower, and this after an earlier investigation regarding sexual deviance, that this pervert was still allowed access. Or why he was not FORCED to resign from the charity instead of just being limited in his access to young men.
I believe a lot of people deserve to go to jail. I hope the DA and the State AG get enough evidence to do exactly that.
I also believe that Penn State should receive the death penalty for their football program for five years and ensure that everyone associated with it is gone before they start anew.
This is sick. So many young men were lured into the clutches of this sick pervert...and so many others stood by and watched and allowed it to happen.
Remember, even after all of this, Sandusky still went to Bowl Games and other functions where he brought young men along with him on the trips and would sit at the tables with them.
Absolutely disgusting and sickening that people in the know turned a blind eye to it for their own gain.
I’d call it incestuous.
Yep
