SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The number of major U.S. companies covering the cost of gender reassignment surgery for transgender workers has more than doubled in the past year, according to a new scorecard compiled by the nation's largest gay rights group.
The Human Rights Campaign said in a report to be published Thursday that 207 of the 636 businesses it surveyed for its annual Corporate Equality Index either are already providing transgender- inclusive employee health benefits or plan to at the start of the new year.
Last year, 85 companies had insurance plans that paid for sex transformation surgeries, and only 49 did in 2009. A decade ago, when the campaign launched the index, none did.

For this, we get Death Panels?
Sorry, Grandmother, Todd must get his weed whacked.
At least with tattoos, there are now methods to reverse changes one has made to one’s body.
With this stuff, there’s nothing to be done once you mutilated yourself!
The MADNESS stops at the last trumpet!
I don’t like the normalization of perversity, but so long as these companies are the only ones paying for it, it’s their business. However, you and I both know there are plenty of politicians who would eagerly mandate that all health insurance plans must cover gender reassignment surgery. That’s where this issue is eventually heading.
Gack. Soon what will be left that shouldn’t be boycotted. Aunt Oriole’s Original Peach Syrup Company in Mobile, Alabama? I wouldn’t be averse to making it a rule that only those surgeries that are legal in the USA (so far sex change is still a Sweden thing) can be covered by US group health plans.
For a long time I wasn’t bugged by letting companies set their own “gay” policies as long as they had the choice of doing it either way without government interference (either no gay or pro gay). I think I’m about to take that part out of my Freep page. Things are getting ultra liberal stupid in a huge lemming run.
What if I just want 7 penises, one for each day?
What’s the cost of an Addadictomy?
The problem is that it is not the insurance companies paying for it, but the subscribers to that insurance plan that foot the bill.
Just like gubmint, they have to take money from someone needing real care and bust it out to the creeps that receive the bennies and the sick-in-the-head doctors that get paid to advance said perversion.
It’s not a free market thing, but a redistribution of wealth and perversion.
It’s odd that, as the medical credibility of this stuff shrinks, the political appea just grows and grows.
Probably a lot less than a chopadictomy.
This sounds like a Madonna requirement.
Where is Rush with the names of these procedures?
I've always wondered - where does a doctor get trained for "sex-change" operations? What kind of residency is there? Does it pay well? It must be a very odd-ball specialty.
What a freaking racket.
Shrinks declare it normal.
Gives cover for medical surgeons to offer it.
Insurance companies don’t care because their pool of insurers (ie all of us) foot most of the bill.
Outrageous.
It is totally crazy.
Everyone has body issues they’d love to change or fix on other peoples’ money.
I’d like some hair removed, some hair added in other places, and I’d like to be about 4 inches taller. And weight about 40 pounds less. And I’d like my insurance to pay for it because shrinks say I need it to be the person I’m not and it’s “medically necessary”.
But this is not fantasyland and nobody should expect to pick up the damn tab for me.
