I feed my dogs "human" food.

Raw meat, liver, brown rice, carrots, brewers yeast, bone meal, berries, cottage cheese, canned sardines, whole grain bread, butter, fish oil etc.

When I told the new vet how old my Border Collie was (he's 13) she was stunned. When she asked what I fed him...she tried to talk me out of it. "You should feed him a well-balanced dog food to ensure he get all the nutrition required for a healthy life".

He can still run 10 miles easily and catch frisbie all day long. Barely any grey whiskers.

Vets are NOT trained in nutrition. They get one semester...and all vet schools are funded by pet food research.

What did dogs live on before Purina?

I beleive aflatoxin has a greater chance of being on corn that is grown in drought conditions.

Have seen “deer corn” being sold which is corn not approved for animal feed because of aflatoxin. The fungus is said to cause abortions in cattle, probably in other animals as well.

Don't know what brand of dry kibble y'all use, so this is just something to be aware of. Sometimes these recalls tend to spread to other brands, too, so it's good to keep an eye on the situation.

Recall on some pet food. Iams, River Run, and Marksman so far.

Yum! Lucky dawg!

Thanks, I’ll be looking into that website.

It’s frightening to think just by the simple act of feeding your dog, you could sicken or kill him.

That sickens ME.

I feed my German Shepherd cooked chicken thighs and mixed with high quality dry food. I used to give her raw ground chicken but she would not eat it unless mixed with cooked food.

Ever since I went to the website www.iamscruelty.com , I refused to ahve anything to do with iams.

Reading about their animal testing sickened me to no end.

May they rot in hell.

Hey, that's one of my favorite meals! Maybe you will invite me to come dine with your dogs one of these days.

Just so you know - I am not new to feeding a “species appropriate” diet. I started way back when I lost one much loved dachsie to heart disease, caused by gum disease. When the second much loved dachas was diagnosed with the same, I did some research into the relationship between kibble, gum/tartar/disease, and decided to switch our little elderly girl ASAP.

Huzzah! Cleared up her gum disease, and also her heart disease! Who would have thought? Now, I could only afford to have their teeth cleaned once a year, which wasn’t enough!

Later, when adopting two Belgian Malinois, I never fed them any other way. They lived out their life-span with no vet visits, health problems, flea or tick problems, vaccines, except for the 3 year rabies required by law - It just works, if done properly, but be careful about who you read.

Billinghurst was good at the beginning, then he got onto all sorts of supplements and grinding up veggie slop - bad idea.

Tom Lonsdale is the real deal. Never feed cooked bones to dogs, although raw-fed dogs are less apt to get into trouble if they come across someone’s discarded Kentucky Fired Chicken leftovers, because their stomach acids are ready to digest bones.

Also, very important - include some organ meats in the right proportion to the raw meaty bones. These give the missing vitamins not found in the muscle meat. I use dried, mostly, but if I am lucky enough to find organic organs, I will give them in small amounts, raw.

It really isn’t any more expensive, in the overall scheme of things, and has been way cheaper for me, even while feeding the highest quality I can find.

You will be shocked at the improvement in poop - hard, not-so-smelly, crumbles away to a whitish powder in the yard after a day or two in the sun -

And, no more anal glands getting clogged up! Totally surprised my groomer of our new little guy (havanese), who hard these stiff little bms that clean his glands the old-fashioned way. You could probably hit them into the next yard with a putting iron, if you wanted. I just use a paper towel now that we live in “senior living”, because these are never gushy or soft.

Also, no more doggy breath, or stinky dog smell when wet...

But, do your homework!

aflatoxins are horrible! I lost a little 1 1/2 year old Jack Russel female to that. It wasn't in dog food it was something in my back yard, we never figured out exactly what. The liver biopsy came back aflatoxin, which is a natural substance not a chemical. She suffered terribly for 3 weeks while we did everything to save her. 3 weeks and $3000. later she died in my arms. I was broken hearted.

typos abound tonight!

“hard” should be “has”.

Groomer surprised because she couldn’t express any smelly stuff from his little anal glands - pooping did the deed for her.

Ditter, I am so sorry for your loss - it is so hard to lose a beloved dog, particularly when they are suffering at the end.

A lot of people do not know that atafloxin can be a big problem with peanuts/peanut butter. For some reason, in some seasons, it is a bigger problem than most know.

Maybe it is related to mold? Could your little girl have gotten into moldy tree nuts? Might be worth doing some research -

Just remember gang... if the little Lovely’s get aflatoxin unknown and you are kissing them or touching their poo etc where do you think that Aflalatoxin?
Thats right! On your skin!
What is the body’s largest living organ? Skin!
Please be careful and be aware. I love my labbie, she has a lot of health issues.
We do not sleep together, I do not let her lick any one’s face or hands. We spend our days together and walk through life together but we are not intimate!
She occasssionally needs alot of meds due to undetermined reasons. My Vet is very progressive and very smart, he’s saved her more than once!

Please wear gloves when giving pills, external meds or picking up poop. WE never know what they have gotten into! Pet Parks are a bad idea for us.

My girl is hyper sensitive and the less exposure the better. She has lots of pals in the hood, they play and have fun but when it comes to her health and my family’s health, We don’t mess around!

Our dang dog food is 89 bucks a bag! DOES not make me happy, believe me!
WE don’t call her “the Six Million Dollar Dog” for nothing!

She’s very well loved and very well cared for but intimate contact other than play and fur rubs is limited.

God Bless all of our furry friends and their families.

Given how our “far back ancestors” lived, I think we have more to fear from our overly-sanitary lives these days.

Exposure to germs, dirt, animals, etc. - within reason, helps us build a healthy immune system that doesn’t get bored and turn on us, mistaking our own organs for invading organisms.

You can get sick from atafloxin from eating cheap peanut butter or old peanuts, for heaven’s sake, and you are worried about your dog making you sick?

I never worry about picking up poop, let my dogs lick me all the time, and let them cuddle with me for a bit before sleep at night, or while enjoying an afternoon nap. I grew up on a farm, never washed my hands, enjoyed fruits and berries (unwashed), and am still here, healthy in my dotage.

You really worry too much about stuff, in my ever-so-humble opinion. That will really shorten your life!

Feed your dog properly (raw meaty diet), and you will have a whole lot less to worry about, but your progressive vet might be very disappointed when you do not call on him any more.

Thank you jacque. Tootie has been gone about 6 or 7 years now and in my grief I replaced her immediately. We have oak trees but it was not the time of year for the acorns to fall. I had mulched the azaleas and some of the mulch was too fresh and had gotten moldy. I remember seeing her stay in the flower bed eating something. I had just had surgery and was afraid to go out in the back yard for fear of falling so I didn't stop her. The next day she started throwing up and that was the beginning of the end.

Try to find a vet’s office that doesn’t have a Hill’s Science Diet / Royal Canin display. Good luck unless you go to a holistic vet. The reps from that company get to the vets while they’re still students. I wouldn’t use that brand if it were given away for free.

Here’s a great site to check out your brand: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/
