STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Firefighters came to the rescue of two police officers outnumbered in Mariners Harbor today, in a scene so chaotic that New Yorks Bravest employed a truck-mounted deluge gun -- a water cannon -- to fend off the marauding group of teens.
The scene unfolded at about 3:30 p.m. in front of 83 Harbor Rd., where a large group of teenagers had amassed to confront a teenage girl who lives in the residence.
By the time it was over, two officers were sent to Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, for treatment, and nine teens ended up under arrest, said Inspector John Denesopolis, the 120th Precinct's commanding officer. Police also recovered a starter pistol, he said.
The officers were OK, but "banged up," Denesopolis said.
"It was chaos," said one neighbor, who lives across the street but declined to give his name, stating that he feared retaliation. "The yelling got louder and louder and louder... There was probably 50 to 55 kids out here, and they were challenging one girl."
The group was threatening the girl, yelling at her to come out and fight, witnesses told the Advance. That sparked calls to 911, and two officers, one male, the other female, arrived at the scene.
The male officer attempted to arrest a member of the crowd, and the teens turned on him, knocking him to the ground.
"The kids were on top of the cop while the cop was arresting the first person," the neighbor said.
When his female partner tried to intervene, witnesses said, she was knocked down as well. As she was being attacked, she shouted for assistance on her police radio.

Juss keepin it reel. No’m’sayin?
What’s interesting here is the police called for assistance and who came first? The fire department that then proceeded to hose down the miscreants.
I’m sure the police “acted stupidly”.

Those darn Amish....
Has Sharpton and Jackson been informed of this injustice by Yt? Well we know Sharpless is too busy hosting on MSNBC. Here comes the racist rants.
LOL, Amish...of course!
Pictures at the site show that a majority of those being sprayed by the water cannon were black. Some of the comments there indicate that the one girl being assailed is white.
No matter, white, black, brown, yellow... fifty angry girls in their late teens can beat you to death as quickly as boys can.
The police were in a life or death situation and were apparenlty saved by the Fire Engine and its water cannon.
IMHO, in such a suuituation, where your life is on the line, the police had the right to defend themselves with deadly force. If six or eight of these girls who were beating and injuring the police officers were shot, they might not be so anxious to do things like this in the future.
With things in inner cities getting out of control like this...I fear that is what is going to happen...which, of course will have Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and people like Maxine Waters reving up hatreed into riots which would require the national guard to come in and put them down.
Again, I do not relish it or wish it...but I fear that is the situation we are headed for on a large scale...particularly if we are successful in these elections and start cutting back all of the handouts and programs these people think they are “entitled” to which are bankrupting and destroying the nation.
So be it. I pray we can set this nation aright without that...but if it must be, we still must set the nation back on the right course.
Inner city kids doing what they do best: Entertaining the rest of the country with their behavior.
I don’t think that’s a deck gun. It looks like the fireman is hosing them with a 1 1/2” preconnected hand line.
Who would have ever guessed this would happen in a black neighborhood.
I hope the Firefighters who have a station just down the block have good security for the cars they drive to work, and that the police patrol the station on a regular basis.
Leroy doesn’t like getting hit with the monitor nozzle.
At my station (not New York) we had specific orders from on high never to use it in a crowd situation.
Yes. I was going to say, even before seeing those pictures, that the Dem city leadership must have put in a considerable effort to diversify the neighborhood.
Staten used to be a quiet, dull, reliably Republican borough.
Having graduated from St Peters I can appreciate what you’re saying. Prior to 1965 it was a fairly isolated place. My father and uncle both graduated for there. I knew the families of the people my father and mother grew up with and dated.
Mariners Harbor would have been all Italian and Irish back then.
Well, then, this would be
“kickin’ it up a notch - BAM”...
Attacking police officers, now, are we?
This is going to get interesting, it appears. When Holder made it clear there would be no prosecutions of “his people”, this was bound to happen.
Are these officers no longer armed?
In the past six months, my small community about 50-miles outside of Portland, Oregon, has gained a number of black families.
They are escaping the coming embroglio which will evnvelope American cities next year. Expect to see “white flight” in massive numbers this coming winter/spring as the economy worsens, too.
