Rep. Brad Miller, who has all but said he is challenging fellow Rep. David Price in next years Democratic primary in North Carolina, is continuing to walk a fine rhetorical line when it comes to what he plans to do in 2012.
Two court cases are challenging the new lines, and Miller told Roll Call last Thursday he is standing shoulder to shoulder with the Democrats in the delegation in support of them. But he also has been campaigning in the new 4th and admits as much.
I am the working the district as drawn by the Legislature [the map] that were still contesting, he said. But he also is appearing at events in his current 13th district, which was reconfigured by GOP mapmakers to heavily favor Republicans. Im trying both to represent the district I was elected to represent in 2010 and to get to know people in the district the Legislature has drawn ... that I live in now, Miller said.
Unless the filing deadline is moved, Miller will have to make a final decision on his 2012 plans by Feb. 29.
Last month, Miller, who has emphasized his liberal bona fides, won the endorsement of the Daily Kos, an influential left-of-center website. The endorsement was made under the assumption Miller was running against Price. The site said their choice of Miller wasnt a knock on Price but a positive affirmation of everything Miller has done during his career in Congress.
Price, who told Roll Call earlier this year he is definitely running in the 4th, recently commissioned a poll of the redrawn district that showed him with a comfortable lead over Miller.
I’m looking at this from a long distance perspective but it seems to me that Price’s and Miller’s voting records are very similiar. Ideologically, it seems like six of one - a half dozen of the other.
Does that sound about right?
They are very similar but I respect Price and loath Miller. Miller is an OWS type. Price is a liberal college professor.
Miller was in the NC Senate in 1998 and was in charge of redrawing the congressional districts in NC. He drew a district for himself and quit the NC Senate in ran and won in his district.
Pretty much. The execrable David Price has been the rep from the 4th District (where I live) for several terms, and the new redrawn 4th is even more liberal than the old one. The Democratic machine loves him here in Durham, as much as they can love any white politician, and I expect he’ll be able to beat Miller should they run against each other.
Price is very liberal, which is OK because this district is now going to be as hard-left as anyplace in the country. Between a high black population in Durham and the large universities in Durham and Chapel Hill, we’re so far to the left here that conservatives aren’t even a factor. We’re just objects of curiosity. In 2008 there was virtually no overt display of support (yard signs, bumper stickers, etc.) ANYWHERE around here for McCain/Palin, while every other car you saw on the street had some sort of Obama sticker on it. And many of them still either have their 2008 stickers or have fresh Obama 2012 stickers on.

The NC Democraps gerrymandered the 13th district ten years ago just for Brad. Turnoubouts are fair play. I live in a “minority” neighborhood and he showed up outside my polling place in 2010. When he walked up within 2 feet of me (probably the first caucasion he had seen that day) I looked him in the face and said “I’m here to vote against YOU”.
Sadly, he won anyway.
oops, caucasion = caucasian. I’m white folks. ;-)
Pretty much. I’ll have to look up their votes later when I get a chance, but I suspect that Price’s record may be slightly better. Beyond that, as far as personalities go Miller is the much more obnoxious of the two (thus the Daily Kos endorsement). He isn’t Alan Grayson level nuts though, so he isn’t worth keeping around in order to embarrass the Dems.
OOOOOOHHHH
How do I find where I am...I hope I can say I USED to be in Bray-ad’s district. It was like having NO representation....
I think we’re in the same district, Moose4.
Hah, I wish I could’ve seen his reaction.
Are you within the new 13th district now?
How deep into Durham do you live? You could be in the 1st (Butterfield) now.
He sort of went into a trance and backed away from and out of my personal space, lol. I’m in SE Raleigh and haven’t checked my new district. It doesn’t much matter over here, no credible Republicans ever bother to get on the ballot. I didn’t even get called for Jury Duty for the first 18 years I lived here in “the hood”, lol.
re: my first reply, in retrospect Bill Randall was credible. Sorry about that, he was one of the few exceptions.
“me too”
I’m in the city proper, kind of on the southwest side along 15/501 near South Square. Looks like I’m in the 4th, but barely. I didn’t realize the 4th had been gerrymandered so much to make a cozy nest for the liberals, or that the sensible parts of Durham and Orange had been split into the 6th. Makes sense.

I checked the map...I THINK I am back in Howard Coble’s district...Lord God, I hope so.
Brad Miller occasionally posts a “diary” on the Kos Klux Klan (aka DailyKos). That makes him a certified frothing-at-the-mouth left wing extremist.
