Is Fox News going centrist for 2012?
The Morning Call ^ | 11-5-11 | Lucas Shaw Reuters

Consider another media critic convinced.

Gabriel Sherman, a contributing editor at New York magazine who has spent many a word on Fox News, wrote a post for the magazine's Daily Intel blog Monday suggesting Fox has adopted a "new strategy" for 2012.

"Fox is trying to credibly capture the center without alienating its loyal core of rabid viewers. To this end, the network is flexing its news-gathering muscles in high-profile ways that will capture media attention," Sherman wrote.

Sherman is not the first media critic to make this claim. Howard Kurtz did so back in September after talking with network chairman Roger Ailes, and observing a Fox News debate in Orlando.

Kurtz wrote that Ailes has a series of anchors and correspondents -- like Chris Wallace, Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly -- who would fit in at any news network with their credentials and willingness to ask tough questions.

Sherman too sees the news side of Fox adopting a more pugnacious approach with the GOP candidates. While the prime time hosts continue to operate in their own universe, Baier conducted a widely praised interview with Mitt Romney, Wallace has peppered Michele Bachmann and the entire field was subject to a roaming New York Times reporter at Saturday's "candidates forum."

Like Kurtz, Sherman remains skeptical, particularly since he does not see this shift as a case of old-fashioned media objectivity. It's just another way of benefiting

Fox.

"2012 is shaping up to be the year that Ailes decided Fox will benefit if the political world recognizes that his network is willing to make GOP candidates sweat in front of their base. Like any good candidate, the network plans to tack toward the center for the general election," he wrote.

You are attacking the messenger. Do you disagree with the assessment that FNC is moving to the center?

I used to watch Fox News a lot. Their drift toward the left has made me reach for the off button on the remote. Their ratings are down from last year, and I’d guess that their ratings will decline until they wake up or go out of business.

I never thought FOX News was on the Right like many claim. They have few real Conservatives there. Most are Republican beltway types. I always got the impression that they were middle of the road to begin with which is better than the alternative outlets. I don’t even think FOX says they are the Right wing news source. They just look that way next to PMSLSD and CNN who are outright Marxist.

Anyhow, I would like to end this post by shooting the messenger again just for fun. The Morning Call is my hometown paper. It a lib rag full of Commie Pinkos and nitwits writing for them. They are garbage of the first order. Screw the Morning Call.

I've mostly stopped watching Fox altogether. At the time I stopped watching, the only shows that I found to be worth watching were Red Eye and, oddly enough, Greta Van Sustern's show. The market is wide open for a right-leaning network - any takers?

this would be incredibly stupid for Fox. They have already been labeled a right wing news outlet by the left...so the left isn’t going to watch it. Moving further to the left is only going to continue to turn off conservatives. All they are going to be left with is those idiotic mouth-breathers that Frank Luntz always surrounds himself with....

The problem with Fox is that the gene pool has become contaminated. It started in part when they brought in Geraldo Rivera. OMG! I could not believe it, he was pictured in Iraq drawing sand pictures showing the troop locations. Since then, they have hired several journalists from CNN, NBC, etc. i.e., John Roberts. I understand they are now going to bring in the failed governor Mark Sanford of No. Carolina. Where do we go but Free Republic.

I could care less if Fox fell off the side the earth. They inspire no loyalty because they play everyone. Just as bad as the MSM who are absolutely corrupt.

FNC is using a play from the RINO playbook: move as far left as you can without totally alienating the conservative base.

Wish there were a wealthy person/organization that would have a TRUE CONSERVATIVE tv network to counter the liberal tv networks.

Bears repeating. They were NEVER conservative. They were more balanced but have been shifting more leftward for the past 10 years.

I’m watching it less and less. The leftward slide is accelerating at an alarming pace.

Watching Fox News on and off tonight, it was obvious they’re now going to do their best to become the instrument of Gingrich’s destruction. Heck, I even heard one of their analysts intimate that Gingrich is a racist, based on his 1971 doctoral thesis on colonialism in the Congo.

The liberal rag here is the Houston Chronicle. Not worth the paper and ink it takes to get it on the street. I read the comics-period.
