Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in PPP's newest poll of Iowa Republican caucus voters with 27% to 18% for Ron Paul, 16% for Mitt Romney, 13% for Michele Bachmann, 9% for Rick Perry, 6% for Rick Santorum, 4% for Jon Huntsman, and 1% for Gary Johnson.
Gingrich has gained 19 points since PPP's last poll of the race in early October. Also showing momentum are Paul whose support is up 8% and Bachmann whose support is up 5%. Romney has dropped 6 points since then with the other candidates mostly standing in place.
Gingrich's rise to the top is being fueled by strong support from seniors and the Tea Party. With voters over 65 he's at 37% leading Romney's 18% and Paul's 11% by 19 and 26 points respectively. With Tea Party voters Gingrich is at 35% with Bachmann actually coming in at second with 23%, Paul in third at 14%, and Romney all the way back at just 4%.

Newt has to hang tough for a month and he will win Iowa. He should do well in NH but that is Romney country and I would bet he (newt) will win SC.
Trump and a few others will be making endorsements soon...lets hope Trump endorses Newt. Trump has clout in NY and Newt needs it.
Gingrich is also well ahead in Florida.
Romney has to have New Hampshire to win, but if Gingrich sweeps through the others (Iowa, South Carolina, Florida), the momentum will be on his side to carry through.
13% for Bachmann! She’s on the way back up! She’ll be leading in IA again by the time the caucuses get here!
The 18% Paul is getting is scary. We know 1/5 of the GOP is RINO Establishment Rockefeller types. But 18% support for a guy that thinks it’s okay for Iran to get nukes and for the US to sit back and do nothing is downright dangerous. Are IA voters really this stupid? Do they not do their homework?
If RP beats Mitt in Iowa, taking 2nd place, it will weaken Romney in NH and make a Newt win more likely there.
With all the attacks ahead on Newt in the coming weeks from the dimoKKKRATS, msm and the RINOs I expect Newt to drop some in the polls but will probably still maintain a lead. There will be salvo after salvo against him.
Paul is running flashy new TV ads saying he will “drain the swamp.”
Newt is not only a fighter, he also has the ability to inspire voters and many of his critics are showing their undisguised nervousness—none more so than the Rove crowd, the RINO establishment, and certainly the mainstream media who are freaking out, right along with the Marxists in power. I am quite cheered by the developments and of the exposure of Newt’s enemies. They have been ours all along now, for decades, but at last they are becoming known.
I don’t think the barrage of attacks against Newt will hurt him as much as others were hurt when it was their turn.
The criticisms of Newt are already baked into the cake. Even his most ardent supporters know he’s a mixed bag of positives and negatives.
I remember similar sentiments about Fred Thompson and South Carolina... Little sparks of hope here and there, indications in the polls that he might be making a move... Alas... History...
To your point on Paul, in Iowa. I have a feeling that the IA voters are JOBLESS, and that fact is trumping Paul’s bizarre foreign policy thinking. When you’re hungry, you’re cranky and Paul does fill the bill for the cranky. These people have no patience left for dealing futher with the foolishness going on and Ron Paul is a wrecking ball that sure seems to suit the mood. The FED for example. Just a guess.
I don’t give a damn what he’s running. The whole idea behind NH and IA having the first contests is because the voters there are supposed to be “so informed” and “in depth” on the candidates and issues, when in reality, they’re no different than any other voter, despite their access to get to know the candidates.
Just basic research will show the typical Paultard supporter is an anarchist with anti-semetic tendencies. The idea that 18% of the IA caucus voters would still vote for a guy like that is pathetic. Add in the 16% of Rockefeller GOP establishment types backing Romney, and you’ve got over a third of GOP voters that have absolutely lost their mind. It’s sad realy.
bachmann rising.
i hope she beats out ronpaul and mittster.
Ron Paul is making his stand in Iowa and pundits say that his motivated peeps have the organization on the ground.
Disaster in the making for Iowa if the state wants to remain serious.
Foreign policy cannot be dismissed, no matter the economy and even there, Ron Paul doesn’t provide any unique solutions, other than more severe cuts that would never pass congress, unfortunately ...
BTTT.
I love your words: “Already baked into the cake”.
True dat.
Hiya Pete!
Are you there in Iowa?
Ughh...what terrible times. I was so young and naive...totally sold on Fred Thompson and convinced that somehow things were going to turn around and he would get the nomination. I clung to that guy to the bitter end.
I learned some painful lessons about getting too excited about any one candidate. But it happened again this go-round with Herman Cain (at least he showed some desire to actually BE president...and had the good sense to know when to drop out).
Slowly but surely, my support for Gingrich is growing. I’ve researched his record and found it more solidly conservative than I originally thought. And now I see the RINO establishment types as well as the liberal media ripping into him, which shows they must fear him for some particular reason.
Yeah, well that’s because the MSM’s plan didn’t include taking down Huckabee in 2008. The MSM propped Huckabee up to stop Romney’s momentum in IA and help McCain (the guy the MSM wanted in 2008) in NH. Huckabee, as you remember, split the social conservative vote with Thompson that prevented him from rising higher. In essence, Huck was a stalking horse for McCain.
This time is different, because the MSM clearly wants Romney, and a victory in IA would all but end the contest early. Judging from the recent HotAir polls, should Newt slip, voters were split on going between Romney and Perry, which means by taking out Newt, the MSM may indeed get their wish. However, if Bachmann is back within striking distance and can be jumped to quickly, she could stand to benefit the most in the effort to keep IA out of the Romney column.
Nice try to tone down her moementum in the poll, but the circumstances are different this time. Mark Levin and Rush have had it and are starting to get more aggressive in regards to saying positive things about Bachmann and Santorum with officially endorsing them.
I find Ron Paul’s rise curious.
Just saw Brit Hume do a major hit job on Gingrich. Unbelievable.
