Argentina has launched a naval campaign to isolate the Falkland Islands that has seen it detain Spanish fishing vessels on suspicion of breaking the countrys blockade of the seas around the British territories.
Argentine patrol vessels have boarded 12 Spanish boats, operating under fishing licences issued by the Falkland Islands, for operating illegally in disputed waters in recent weeks.
Argentine patrol commanders carrying out interceptions near the South American coast told Spanish captains they were in violation of Argentinas legal blockade of sea channels to the Falklands.
The warning has been backed up in a letter to Aetinape, the Spanish fishing vessels association from the Argentine embassy in Madrid warning boats in the area that Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and adjoining maritime spaces are an integral part of the Argentine territory.
President Cristina Kirchner has adopted a steadily more belligerent stance towards Britains South Atlantic possessions.
A newly formed gathering of South American nations meeting in Venezeula backed Argentinas sovereignty demands at the weekend.
Argentinas claim over the Falklands was backed by a newly formed block of South American and Caribbean countries, CELAC, on Saturday with unanimous approval. Mrs Kirchner used the last UN General Assembly meeting to put Argentinas claims of sovereignty over the Falklands on a par with Palestinian claims to statehood.
But it is the Falklands economic lifeline that has been most affected by Argentinian manoeuvring.
It announced permits were required by all ships using Argentine waters en route to the Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, all of which are UK controlled.
Argentina declared vessels were operating illegally in the South Atlantic if they did not request permission to enter Argentine waters. The authorities declared their willingness to put an end to all those illegal fishing activities.

The commie in Buenos Aires needs a distraction

They are led by a radical leftists for many years, they have taken control of media and schools which put out propaganda.

If England has decided that they no longer need to project their military more than 10 metres (as they say) beyond their coast, then they don’t deserve to keep those islands, as they are nowhere close to being up to the fight.
Game over...just keep stripping down and giving your underwear to your newly-arrived immigrants, who hold the knives and guns (and judges) to get whatever they need from you wimps.
I wonder if that was one of the reasons Obozo waffled on the pipeline.
“I’ll bet Captain Harry Wales is suiting up and washing and waxing his helicopter as we speak....er, type.”
In actuality, I believe Prince William is about to have a tour of duty in the new year in the Falkland Islands. So indeed, royalty will be present there, possibly during further provocations on the part of Argentina. Will be interesting to keep one beady royal watching eye on this situation.
Forget E-Cat; just harness the rotational force from Admiral Lord Nelson’s casket. You could power a nation!
I can see messing with the British. But dragging Spain into it seems to be a rather stupid move on the part of the Argentines.
True, if Great Britain has a credible naval threat nearby, backed up with air power, Argentina is setting itself up for another old fashioned whuppin’.
Well, THAT’S different. In the hands of Islamists, nuclear weapons mean something else altogether.
In the hands of RATIONAL people, probably not.
Send a team from the RN//SBS into Argentina, grab Kirchener, bring her back to London, and imprison her in the Tower of London, where the tourists could pay £10 to throw rotten vegetables at her.
A Royal Navy torpedo might have a sobering effect on the Argentine Navy ala General Belgrano.
Try 5 submarines off the coast of Argentina with Harpoon missiles. Plus Typhoons running air support and ASM from the Falklands.
The Brits won’t nuke Argentina over the Falklands period . The Argentinians aren’t totally stupid so they won’t commit atrocities against the folks on the islands.
The Royal Navy still has nuclear submarines with torpedoes, cruise missiles, lock out chambers for Royal Navy Special Boat Squadron commando’s that the Brits can use to basically play havoc with the Argentinian maritime assets of all descriptions and sizes.
I thought this was a 20 year-old article. Great Britain needs to send a sub down there for some live-fire exercises.
“...whatever Cunard has sailing near Southampton ...”
Is Cunard still around?
I thought they merged with Aer Lingus and became ....uh...they became cu ... um......never mind.
US Refuses To Endorse British Sovereignty in Falklands Oil Dispute
Times Online UK ^ | February 25, 2010 | Giles Whittell and James Bone
Washington refused to endorse British claims to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands yesterday as the diplomatic row over oil drilling in the South Atlantic intensified in London, Buenos Aires and at the UN. Despite Britains close alliance with the US, the Obama Administration is determined not to be drawn into the issue. It has also declined to back Britains claim that oil exploration near the islands is sanctioned by international law, saying that the dispute is strictly a bilateral issue.
“Don’t make us come back there and kick your ass again, Argies.”
Spain still harbors hopes of taking back Gibraltar..
