Former U.S. Sen. Bob Smith endorses Newt Gingrich
The Union Leader ^ | 12/03/2011 | Garry Rayno

CONCORD — Former New Hampshire U.S. Sen. Bob Smith is endorsing Newt Gingrich for President.

Smith said in his endorsement, “It is not enough to simply defeat President Obama. We must replace him with an inspirational, experienced, conservative leader, with the guts to challenge and change the establishment. Newt Gingrich is that leader.”

The former senator said 2012 is a critical election that will either usher in an American revival or turn the country into a bankrupt, third world power.

He said conservatives need to do more than simply win the election; they need to make sweeping changes in Washington and the country.

Use/paraphrase my comment in the following, if you like. I copied and pasted libertarian neocon's post to show a little of the voting record and assume it to be true (from memory).

Gingrich has been trying to appeal to as many voters as possible—even muddleheaded TV watchers. A politician’s voting record is the only way to see the truth about him.

How Conservative is Newt's Actual Voting Record?

The folks at Club for Growth has white papers on all the GOP candidates summarizing their public records and does a pretty objective job. Looking at Newt's I really was struck by how conservative Newt's actual voting record was (which of course was mischaracterized by Jennifer Rubin, who I think must have been offered a post in a Romney administration. How else do you explain her going full spittle in support of Romney and anti-Newt?)., with most of the worrisome aspects of his record coming from speeches AFTER he left public office. This is pretty much the exact opposite of Romney, who has a very questionable record from his limited time in elected office, with most of his conservatism coming from campaign speeches. Anyway, let's look at Newt's actual record:

I also decided to look myself at how much federal spending increased while Gingrich was Speaker of the House (1995-1999). By my calculations, Federal spending rose an average of 3.1% a year while he was speaker. When you compare it to the Presidential terms from Reagan on, this is the lowest rate of spending growth over the last 30 years. Under Reagan, spending grew an average of 7.6% a year. Under George H.W. Bush, 6.7%. Under Clinton, 3.3% (it would have been much more if he got his single payor health care plan through, also he was restrained by Newt later). Under W., it as 6.6% and under Obama, a whopping 8.6% a year. Also, under Newt, Federal spending as a % of GDP fell from 21% to 18.5%, a whopping decline in 4 short years.

Is his record perfect? Nope. Not even close. But the point is that on the big issues, he voted Conservative and helped champion balanced budgets and tax reform. Focusing on that actual voting record really makes me more comfortable with him. Especially when his main opponent is someone whose main accomplishment is a massive government healthcare program.

The GOP establishment would be just as happy with La Raza Rick Perry or with easily compromised Newt Gingrich as they would with mini-ObaMao care Romney.

Maybe that Newt has outgrown his schlong management problems (we hope), he will be the least distasteful of the three.

But let's not kid ourselves about sticking it to the GOP establishment. Our last opportunity to do that ended earlier today.

""""if we pull this off""""""

WHEN we pull this off, is the correct statement. Great post. Time to get to work now. I have already recruited a few of my friends to Newt, wasn't hard to do, once I emailed them the videos of his speeches.

Now that Cain is off the screens, a few others will join us.

I have an unopened bottle of Champagne left from the last election, ready to throw a NEWT WINS celebration party, can't wait to pop the cork.

Coral Springs, Florida – U.S. Senate candidate Bob Smith’s endorsement record was questioned last night, November 5, 2009, at the "DC Works for US" meeting held at Wings Plus Restaurant in Coral Springs. Two representatives from the Republican Majority Campaign (RMC) asked Sen. Smith about his endorsement of the cowardly John Kerry during the 2004 Presidential Election. On camera, Smith responded and admittied to the endorsement of John Kerry over President Bush “because he [Bush] pulled the plug on me and embarrassed me”.

I have not felt this positive since Reagan won. Glad we had 8 years of Bush, though flawed, yet I felt safe with him, but Reagan was the best.
