Los Angeles police used nearly a dozen undercover detectives to infiltrate the Occupy LA encampment before this week's raid to gather information on the anti-Wall Street protesters' intentions, according to media reports Friday.
None of the officers slept at the camp, but they tried to blend in during the weeks leading up to the raid to learn about plans to resist or use weapons against police, a police source told the Los Angeles Times. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is ongoing.
The undercover work yielded information that some protesters were preparing bamboo spears and other potentially dangerous weapons in advance of an expected eviction, none of which were used, according to the City News Service, which first reported the story.

The little occupiers must feel confused though. After being publicly supported and enabled by the mayor and his minions for two months, more than two dozen now face criminal charges.

Maybe they could now tell us what this protest is all about. I have yet to hear or read a clearly articulated “what they are protesting and what they expect to gain”.
This is kind of like obama’s change speech. Lots about change, but nothing about what is going to change from what to what.
If there were a dozen undercover police at the event, they represented about 25% of the crowd. What, 50 people show up?

Absolutely, in addition, investigative reporters and others with whatever motives, move right into these types of groups. The larger the groups, the more they are infiltrated or internally monitored for intelligence.
Call me stupid, but I see little “law enforcement” necessary around the Tea Party groups.
Especially those that are new, or gain a lot of sudden attention, like the Tea Party did. Many times they move into these groups just to monitor for intel purposes, they're monitored to watch who is funding them, determine who the players are behind the scenes etc. But it's not just law enforcement. As I said, investigative journalist, political competition, private investigators etc, routinely infiltrate these types of organizations.
Of course, many times it's not the local police conducting these operations, but other law enforcement organizations, like the FBI for instance.
Along with protests/political groups, even companies are routinely infiltrated by competitors/law enforcement, private investigators and others with whatever motives.
In the 60’s, the single largest source of CPUSA’s revenue was the money the FBI was paying its informants.

The FBI UC guys were easy to spot: dry cleaned jeans, and they smelled better. Some, if not all of that probably applied here too.
