Herman Cain, the insurgent populist whose candidacy has been ensnared by allegations of sexual impropriety, said Saturday that he is leaving the race for the Republican presidential nomination, saying that the allegations have cast a "cloud of doubt over me and this campaign."
"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," he said at an event in Atlanta. "I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt . . . on me, on my family, not because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter."
Cain's campaign had sent mixed signals as to his future since Ginger White, an Atlanta woman who claims to have had an affair with Cain for more than a decade, went public with her story earlier this week. While Cain has said he has been "reassessing" his candidacy, he also, at times, has been fiercely defiant, suggesting that unnamed enemies have been trying to do him in and vowing to press forward.
"The pundits would like for me to shut up, drop out and go away," he said. "I am not going to be silenced, and I am not going away."

I cant believe all the doomsdayers who are predicting the fall of the nation over this decision.
If our forefathers had given up this easily, we would still be British with red-hair and bad teeth.
If the men who fought WWII had given up this easily, my grandmother would have never been liberated from Auschwitz and I wouldnt even be a zygote.
NUT UP people! One man dropping out of the race does not necessarily herald the doom of the entire republic or even the election. Its starting to sound like a bunch of DU idiots in here who threaten to leave the country every time something doesnt go their way.
I liked Cain, would have likely voted for him. But he isnt the Messiah- whether youre waiting for the Messiahs second visit or his first. :-)
‘Dammit!’

What you said, nav.
This is beyond depressing. First Sarah, now Herman.
And the same thing Newt did and is now the front runner.
Had he not even informed them?
When will you people quit reading the MSM? Cain has not quit this is to arm himself and his family to uncover the lying Bozo and Soro’s money trying to get FUBO re-elected!
How easy people forget, that the only politician that lost his position because of “Monica Gate”, was Bob Livingston.
We will never win playing the “Republicans have to be ‘holier-than-thou’ game.
Gingrich/Cain was my tagline after their ‘conversation’. There was clearly mutual respect and affection - good chemistry and shared humor.
Newt should do it - he hates the media - payback!!!
No, I grieve for America that this decent can have this happen to him, and that the only people who run for office and win are turds.
Maybe my attitude is affected by the fact that I’m rereading Atlas Shrugged, and seeing how the looters rig the game. I think we just witnessed them doing that.
Oh well, life goes on...at least we have a great SEC Championship game to look forward to in 90 minutes.

.................My dog could beat obama, with a billion dollar campaign fund
send money

Turnabout is fair play.
DESTROY ZER0!!
Jam his phony birth certificate down his corrupt throat!!
Yes, indeed.
I am done and I will now happily vote for Obama, so that he can finish destroying the nation!

Obama might as well own what’s coming. When Obamacare destroys the economy, etc.
My only concern is Supreme Court nominees, etc. He can do a lot of damage, particularly because the Republicans have no ... spine.
This is so depressing. I really like Mr. Cain. I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel and the man has a great sense of humor.
Folks, what do we stand for, if were willing to vote for a man who does things we spend our time her condemning daily?
Seems like a rational fair question to me. I'm not sure why it elicited the, "Pick your nose if you like..." and "...enough of your rant." responses.
Are we or aren't we against signing on to the global warming nonsense?
Are we or aren't we against signing on to amnesty for illegals?
Are we or aren't we in favor of Obamacare, and all aspects of it?
Aren't these the guidelines we should keep in mind when picking our nominee?
There's no attempt on my part to single you out. In general this is what I think our people should be keeping in mind, and I don't think it's irrational to say so.
4am texts and cash on the side wo telling the wifey over 13 years speaks for itself.
Well, if he is, I am too; I concur with his sentiment. Professional politicians tend to be those who have been through a vetting process when it comes to scandals, and if they've survived up to a certain point you can be sure that there are few if any skeletons remaining in the closet. Upstarts like Cain, if they're human at all, have all kinds of circumstances in their past that have the potential to be mined by the opposition.
In Cain's case, the scandal was directed at the conservative base, and they've obviously decided that they don't like what they see.
Your dog could beat Obama, but Obama will crush Romney like a bug.
Let's hope so.
In the meantime, what's next?
Bachmann is by far the most conservative candidate with a proven track record of integrity, but she is being overlooked at our own peril.
Newt? He has done far worse than Cain ever did in his personal life.
Perry? Meh
I like Bachmann a lot.
I wish others did.
