Romney and Gingrich, From Bad to Worse
By George F. Will December 2
Republicans are more conservative than at any time since their 1980 dismay about another floundering president. They are more ideologically homogenous than ever in 156 years of competing for the presidency. They anticipated choosing between Mitt Romney, a conservative of convenience, and a conviction politician to his right. The choice, however, could be between Romney and the least conservative candidate, Newt Gingrich.
Romneys main objection to contemporary Washington seems to be that he is not administering it. God has 10 commandments, Woodrow Wilson had 14 points, Heinz had 57 varieties, but Romneys economic platform has 59 planks 56 more than necessary if you have low taxes, free trade and fewer regulatory burdens. Still, his conservatism-as-managerialism would be a marked improvement upon todays bewildered liberalism.
Gingrich, however, embodies the vanity and rapacity that make modern Washington repulsive. And there is his anti-conservative confidence that he has a comprehensive explanation of, and plan to perfect, everything.
Granted, his grandiose rhetoric celebrating his transformative self is entertaining: Recently he compared his revival of his campaign to Sam Waltons and Ray Krocs creations of Wal-Mart and McDonalds, two of Americas largest private-sector employers. There is almost artistic vulgarity in Gingrichs unrepented role as a hired larynx for interests profiting from such government follies as ethanol and cheap mortgages. His Olympian sense of exemption from standards and logic allowed him, fresh from pocketing $1.6 million from Freddie Mac (for services as a historian), to say, If you want to put people in jail, look at the politicians who profited from Washingtons environment.

They have succeeded in taking Cain out, knocked Perry down to size and now Newt’s up to bat with the MSM. All part of their plan to give us Romney.
It’s not like George F. Will has been carrying the MSM’s water for decades... /s
Will is in no position to lecture on anything but bi focals and bowties
Kilpatrick was real conservative from that era....JJ
Ehm, you may want to learn the FACT first by reading the article before posting anything.
Did you actually read the article?
It's a good hill on which to die; the only decent one of the lot.
America will regret a Gingrich nomination.
I agree with George on this point. . . . . .
Let me guess, he’s supporting Perry because his wife works for Perry? Conflict of interest, anyone?
As much as she regrets the Obama nomination?
No nomination in the history of the USA or future nomination can be as regrettable as the Obummer nomination.
bttt
Will is exactly right about Newt.
What a terrible mess America, and FR, are in.
"Sorry Ma'am your husband is in dire straights. He has newt gingrich and we have to operate immediately".
Ref. post #13.
You said it all for me...every single word.
Thank you.
I am enjoying watching heads explode.
Also, since Newt’s life has been an open book for years, there is nothing they can invent to bring him down.
I am having fun watching people not read the article. Will dismisses Romney like he’s shooing a fly.
Reality will suffice.
Well, at least I admitted I didn't read past "Mitt Romney, a conservative." :-)
Yes and yes again!
WaPo still trying to explain our candidates to us. Pathetic.
