I’ve lived in the Atlanta area for almost 20 years, where Cain is based. He has — or HAD, until now — a sterling reputation here. The man built a career over four decades at various companies in various geographic locations, and yet, I’m supposed to believe that he went hog-wild during 2-3 years at the NRA (with accusations coming out of Chicago...hmmm). This last one supposedly was still having an affair with him when he was battling for his life against stage 4 prostate cancer ... hmmmm. After a supposed 13-year affair, all this one can produce is a cell phone bill and a couple of books he signed for her? And now we’re finding out that SHE initiated most of the text message exchanges, including the one at 4:30 AM, and a lot of her messages were asking for money? C’mon, a 13-year affair. She claims he flew her around the country to be with him and showered her with gifts. OK, let’s see the gifts. Airplane boarding passes? Concert or other event tickets? Pictures? Love letters? Incriminating answering machine messages? WITNESSES? One of her former business partners during that time said that she NEVER ONCE mentioned Herman Cain. A 13-year affair would leave more of a trail. Plus, we find out that this woman has had a bankruptcy and six evictions (true, good people can get in a financial bind, especially now, but that could indicate a possible financial motive). We also find out that she filed a sexual harassment suit that was dismissed, had a restraining order against her for stalking/harassing/threatening e-mail and text messages, and she was served with a libel suit that she lost because she failed to answer it. I’m sorry, but she is hardly a credible accuser.
I’m giving Cain the benefit of the doubt here. He has a reputation as a kind and generous man, and it infuriates me to see this being done to him and to his family. I’ll choose to take my cue from Gloria Cain. That woman is nobody’s fool.

I remember reading about a young man who was considered to be mentally handicapped. Turns out he was very intelligent. Why did they diagnose him as being mentally handicapped? Because he was SO KIND.
Kind just doesn’t fit in with our world. I think Cain’s enemies found out his greatest vulnerability: he is so different than the standard DC fare that people cannot believe it is for real. As you said, Cain has spent 4 decades in various places and came out with people knowing that he was for real. And as soon as the Chicago machine comes into the picture, all of a sudden people believe that the Cain who has existed for the past 40 years can’t be real any more.
