en. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said that Newt Gingrich would be a "heaven-sent" nominee for President Obama's reelection campaign and that there was "silent cheering" from the Obama campaign about his emergence in the GOP race. The senator went on to dismiss the former Speaker as a "bomb thrower" in a call with reporters Thursday.
"I was in the House with Newt, as a matter of fact, years ago. I can remember him being a bomb thrower at that time," Harkin said. "One of those people always lobbing things around - I thought at that time, in his early career in the House, he was irresponsible at that time."
Harkin went on to say that while he has "never met a more undisciplined person," he admitted that Gingrich was an "intriguing individual."

I generally consider Sen. Harkin’s opinions to be worth less than a bucket of warm spit, but hope he’s right on this one. Because Newt will pound the Kenyan out of Obama.
The media can only be responsible so far (all Republicans get the tear-down treatment eventually), Newt has himself to blame. And please don’t compare Newt to Reagan, it’s absurd.
That’s pure fantasy crapola, and you know it. Newtie handed Clinton his second term on a silver platter. This guy is toxic and has been since the end of 1995. Bubba himself is excited to have him as the GOP nominee, because it will be easy as pie to destroy him.
Hey, man, put up Newt and watch what happens. Zero ain’t going anywhere with that opportunistic assclown as the GOP nominee.
It doesn’t matter to Democrats how despicable THEIR politicians are, but it does to our side. Newtie has a mountain of other problems before we get to his personal life stuff. Three wives, chronic cheater, and cheating during the Clinton impeachment. Zero is unpopular, and Newt will be even more so by the general election. All the media has to do is drive up Newtie’s negs, and that will be as easy as can be. This train wreck has got to be stopped.
Debates well ? Whoopee. It’s just talk. Newtie carries a mountain of baggage and we ignore that at our own peril. I don’t understand any FReeper who claims to be a Conservative who could be championing his candidacy. What about his long record of betraying Conservatism and pandering to the left ? His personal garbage ? His spectacular burn-out as Speaker when he had the chance to show leadership ? In our rush to take out Slick Willard, replacing him with someone equally execrable is no solution.
You tell me why he was massively unpopular. He was the sole target of the entire leftist media machine for two years, an all encompassing UNTRUE barrage that makes the attacks on GWB seem tame. He was also the target for two years of trumped up FALSE ethics charges in the house (all proved to be false and only political).
Again, you tell me what did he actually do as speaker, legislatively, that was wrong. Flaming him and libeling him may have worked once, in today’s environment the spin machine can’t do it again.
Gingrich’s past doesn’t matter to people to whom it never mattered—Republicans who ignored it because he shared some of our beliefs and goals. I’m not sure how that’s going to translate outside the primaries.
Bob Dole had nothing to do with it?
Just like McCain had nothing to do with losing in 2008.
Yup....dream on sport!
HEAVE HARKIN!
“I agree - BFD. Reagan was divorced and Clinton screwed everything that moved - I dont think that the American public is such a bunch of immature prudes that were going to elect a leader based on such largely irrelevant factors.”
Really? How do you explain what happened to Cain?
Whistling past the graveyard????
rather quiet on here regarding Cain, MB, RS.
The great MITT MELT is happening. When MITT is gone, the fear of MITT is gone and people can focus on a CONSERVATIVE candidate instead of the stop-MITT candidate. I guess I’m the only one who see the possibility of a very interesting March-APril primary season.
Again, if you think Newtie is “Conservative Change”, I have a bridge I’d like to sell you in Brooklyn. I trusted him back in the early to mid ‘90s. I’ll NEVER make that mistake again.
Hey, man, you’re the one letting the media and political establishment choose the Republican nominee. They’re laughing at your naivete.
You clearly don't like Newt, and your tag line makes it clear you aren't a Perry fan. Who are you backing?
FWIW, I pretty much agree with you on Newt. I was one of his biggest fans at one point (hence my screen name), but he has let me down so often, I have become disillusioned.
I'd still gladly take him over Obama, but I don't really trust him.
I probably need to alter the tagline, since I’m equally opposed to both La Raza Rick, Newt & Slick Willard (nevermind Zero). I’m backing the man the media and the political establishment hate the most. The one for whom they’ve gone the extra mile to concoct phony allegations against. I’m on the Cain Train.
Harkin also lied about his service while a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War:

Just sayin...
