Mitt Romney struggles to find a strategy to combat Newt Gingrich’s surge
Washington Post ^ | November 30, 2011 | Philip Rucker and Peter Wallsten

All along, everything has gone according to Mitt Romney's plan. His strategists didn't believe that Tim Pawlenty would catch on. They were confident that Michele Bachmann would fade. They were prepared for Rick Perry. They never thought Herman Cain would pass the commander in chief test. But they didn't count on a late and strong rise by Newt Gingrich ...

If this was not anticipated by Romney and his team, how well does Romney understand the constituents of the GOP? And how well does he represent the GOP?

Mitt’s a stuttering, incoherent boob. I doubt he could fathom why people wouldn’t want him.

Romney is waiting for the inevitable thrashing that the Driveby media and the Axlerod machine will bring down on Newt Gingrich.

Yup. And should Mittens win the nomination he better be ready for the same treatment. And then some.

Precisely, one needs only to look at the enthusiasm factor of his supporters to see why this could have been a problem seen a long time ago.

Romney is now joining the other “NOT NEWT” candidates.

Newt is the latest “not Romney”. If it comes to it, I will support Romney, but I would prefer “not Romney”.

Here's something for Willard to try: Go home. Stay there. We don't trust you, we don't like you, and we sure as hell don't think you have what it takes to beat Obama in next years general election.

And no, this has not one damn thing to do with your religion...

Romney may actually be forced to become visible...his whole “strategy,” so far as I can see, is staying out of the public eye and avoiding any real questions.

Based on his thin-skinned whining about Brett Baier's interview, he won't fare very well when the media/Obama goons start shredding him .....

I gave my nieces some advice in picking a husband - do not marry a man with a handshake that feels like a sweaty marshmallow. Romney strikes me as a sweaty marshmallow type of guy.

Total B.S. article!

This is from the “establishment” that want the people to focus on the only two “establishment” candidates.

Sorry not falling for the heavy left Washington Post article like many Republicans have.

Whatever the Washington Post says is 99% of the time spin, lies and deception. Don’t even waste your time reading this used tampon called a newspaper. They are nothing but Ghouls pretending they are journalist.

If you doubt me, then just look this up. When was the last time the Washington Post endorsed a Republican Candidate for President of the United States?

Mitt is acting like the heir apparent to the throne—Prince Charles, American Style.

He has been groomed for the job of President since he could walk. He thinks it is now ‘his time’, and he just doesn’t connect with the voters.

MissMagnolia, I gave my own daughters similar advice even though the “sweaty marshmallow” analogy was not known to me at the time.

Funny! My parents always said: never trust anyone "with a handshake that feels like a sweaty marshmallow". So true!

Although still in the lead, Mitt has fallen quite a bit at Intrade. A few weeks ago, he was at 68, now he’s down to 49. Meanwhile Newt has risen from bupkis to 35.

The bottom line at this point in time - let me repeat that: at this point in time (an time waits for no man) - is that there are two likely possibilities for the Republican nomination: Newt and Mitt. There are several increasingly unlikely possibilities, and getting unlikelier by the day, if not the hour.

Personally, I was never overly happy with the choices that came forward in the GOP race. I too hoped that either Perry or Cain would prove to be substantial and ready (they are two different things). Perry was not ready, and thus we were not given time to test his substance. Cain also was not ready, and we had not enough time to test the proposition of a man seeking to win office for the first time and choosing the highest office in the land for that attempt. In the last hundred years, and maybe longer, this had been done by only one other man, Dwight Eisenhower. But he was a man who had already been entrusted with the lives of millions and the fate of nations, so the analogy fails.

It is now December, one month to go until the first actual primary real event, and the holiday season will draw away the attention of many if not most. So, here is the bottom line realistically speaking: Newt or Mitt or, most unlikely, and with no guaranty of a good result, a brokered convention. Both are flawed candidates. Both have taken positions I do not agree with. Neither is a thorough-going conservative. And that’s the truth of it.

So, what where does that leave us? With this: Mitt is very smart, very polished, adequately experienced, leans left, takes no risks, and seems offended when pressure is put on him. Newt is very smart, not so polished, very experienced, leans right, takes risks, and knows how to fight, even though sometimes the wrong people. There is one other factor: Mitt started life with much in his favor, has never fallen hard, and thus never had to eat crow; Newt started life with much less, fell very hard and more than once, and knows well the taste of crow.

Based on the above assessment, I think the choice for a conservative person, which I very much am, is relatively easy. It is the choice between a turkey and an ugly duckling. There is at least a chance, in regard to the ugly duckling, that he will turn into a swan with the help and pressure of those who want him to become such.

I call Newt the ugly duckling.
