New details are emerging surrounding the death of an 18-year-old who committed suicide this weekend.
Joaquin Lunas death has captured national attention after the family told Action 4 News Joaquin killed himself over immigrant concerns and the Dream Act.
On Tuesday, sources close to the investigation reached out to Action 4 News claiming that is simply not true.
They said the suicide letters left behind did not mention Lunas concerns over the Dream Act or his immigration status.
Sources went on to tell Action 4 News Joaquin left behind eight to nine letters each dedicated to people close to him including his sisters, brothers and even his best friend.
Action 4 News asked the family about the claims.
They admit, they havent seen the letters, but said theyre sticking to their belief that he committed suicide because he feared his future as an undocumented immigrant.
Lunas cousin told Action 4 News before Joaquin took his life Friday night, he had mentioned he wanted a better life but couldnt have one because of his legal status.
But Joaquin was an A, B student at Juarez-Lincoln High School and Principal Clem Garza said staff saw a different side of Joaquin.
She said he never mentioned the Dream Act or showed signs that he didnt believe he would be able to attend college or have a career.
"The signs that he exhibited were 'I'm determined to make it'" said Garza.
Garza showed us his college essay and even an email sent by Joaquin earlier this month indicating his plans to send the essay to different universities in hopes of getting scholarships.
The school counselor told us he was still in the process of sending those essays.
Staff and students remain baffled as to why he would take his life.
They said he had shown motivation and determination to go to college and become an engineer no matter what.
Do you think the Lefties and the MSM encouraged the family to lie? It is their MO, by any means necessary.
what a shock.
My comment at their site on the original article was right.
It’s pathetic that his family lied about the reasons behind his suicide...
First, if it WAS due to his status as “undocumented” then his parents have NO-ONE to blame but THEMSELVES for bringing him here illegally. It is CHILD ABUSE to force these kids into a life of crime because the parents are criminals themselves. What did they expect would happen to their kids when they came here to begin with???
Secondly, this family lied to the media about the reasons for his suicide. It frankly makes me wonder a bit about the real reasons behind his death... A family that would take to the media about their son’s suicide, and then lie about the reasons within such a short period of time from his death — I don’t know. There’s just something fishy about the behavior of his family, IMHO.
Perhaps a depressed closet dweller?
I can’t figure out which is the lower form of life. The “media” for exploiting this suicide or the family who is exploiting this suicide.
Was it suicide or was it murder?
I was getting around to asking that question myself... They say he shot himself in the head - are we sure he pulled the trigger himself? This family’s behavior brings up ALL of these questions IMHO.
Nobody’s shown one of these suicide notes yet.
And, I thought they DID have engineering programs in Mexico, if worse came to worst.
What a sick family. They should be ashamed.
The college application deadline is December 31. It’s a lot of pressure for a teenager. He panicked.
I’m sure the real reasons he committed suicide were either:
(1) he was bullied because he was gay;
or
(2) he was despondent over increased global warming.
Using this kid’s personal tragedy for their own political ends; real classy.
Dream act is national suicide...in action.
I immediately called bs on it when it first came out. He would have been accepted to college on the Dream Act and with his good grades if he was in the Top 10% of his class he had automatic acceptance. Plus, with all the hispanic scholarships, first generation scholarships, first of family education/graduation/whatever scholarships, specific scholarships to that area/border students (aka illegals), English as a second language and economically disadvantaged scholarships he would have been set for at least the first two years free ride. Believe me, I know exactly what scholarships are out there because I’ve been hunting them down for my kids and one’s college assigned dorm roommate is an illegal (don’t get me started on that soapbox) with scholarships out the whazoo.
The News4 lied and isn’t going to back down because their viewers want it to be true and to save face.
The family lied for whatever reason be it sympathy, radical political views to push the illegal agenda or seeing a money train over this. If this is any indication of his family, then it’s no wonder the poor kid couldn’t take it anymore. What a sick, sick family.
I think I’m beginning to understand why this kid committed suicide.
He wanted to get away from his classless, stinking p.o.s. family.
Hardly. That would have been around 6 weeks down the road which is forever for teens. If he was in the Top 10%, he could have written, "See Spot run" repeatedly for the word limit on his essays and still have been accepted. In Texas, the law is any student in the top 10% of their class has automatic acceptance to any state university of their choice (UT Austin is top 8% because they're speeeeecial). If he wasn't ranked that high, he was still the perfect candidate for acceptance. There had to have been another reason for his death.
You just know this has to be a Democrat family. The same kind of no-class punks who would politicize the tragic suicide of a son are the same kind of punks who would turn a Minnesota senator’s funeral into a political pep rally. They’re all the same classless ilk. You just can’t get any lower than Democrats.
Engineering colleges in many universities have low acceptance rates. A teenager with emotional problems and high expectations can crack at application time.
