Engineering colleges in many universities have low acceptance rates. A teenager with emotional problems and high expectations can crack at application time.

UT Brownsville is 30 minutes from his home. Both of these links are showing 100% acceptance rates and a July deadline. Talk about easy breezy no pressure whatsoever. As I've said all along, college acceptance was not or should not have been a factor in this tragedy. Yes, some schools are more selective in Engineering. Some do. Some don't. That's why you should always have a plan B. If nothing else, get your foot in the door under a related major, take your required core courses just like every other freshman, get to know the Engineering heads and apply for Engineering the following year. Most freshmen come in thinking they want X but end up degreeing in Y. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Still, I suspect his wicked parents have a lot to do with this.
