As Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has climbed to the top of the polls, the former House speaker has repeatedly stated that the money he earned doing business with the health care industry and controversial clients like Freddie Mac never came from lobbying.
But an in-depth look at Gingrich's business practices from the New York Times illustrates how Washington insiders can use their clout to exert influence on behalf of corporate interests, even if they're not officially a "lobbyist."

He's the same Newt that everyone considered a joke just a few months ago. Newt had a couple of good debate performances, but he's still the same fraud he always has been.
Yes and a whore is not a whore until you pay her.
“between 1998 and 2006, 43 percent of all members of Congress took lobbying jobs after leaving Congress, landing positions with an average annual salary of $2 million.”
What honest work did they do to earn an average salary of $2 million per year?
Got it.
So now Newt Gingrich shouldn’t be allowed to make public recommendations at summit speeches.
I must have missed the part where Newt Gingrich claimed to have never made recommendations to anyone as a private citizen.......
Yes I agree. And yet he still looks much better than Mitt!
Run Sarah Run!
“Yes I agree. And yet he still looks much better than Mitt!
Run Sarah Run!”
...and much, much better than Obama.
“Yes and a whore is not a whore until you pay her.”
Sounds like you know something we haven’t figured out. Smart fella and you You got a good point.
Newt DOES know his way around. But, I think it’s almost like we got into a game of poker and we’re playing REAL high stakes and we can have someone sit in for us for a while. Phil Ivey is sitting in the corner and ready to go and willing to sit in for us. Do we get him?
Nahhhhhhhhh.
Let’s ask our old friend, that guy over there, to play because he’s such a nice fella and we like him. And besides, he always does pretty well at the nickel and dime Friday game at the house. And poker is just poker. He’ll pick it up as he goes along.
I don’t share the instant contempt for lobbyists. Generally speaking, they are more honorable than the people they lobby.
That's kind of like saying the guards at Hitler's death camps were better than Hitler.
If a former congressional member received $2,000,000 a year and Newt made $135 million for companies in fields in which he had no expertise (e.g. health care), it's obvious that their clients want only one thing: to purchase influence and connections.
Newt makes my skin crawl.
“Newt makes my skin crawl.”
Not as much as he makes Zero’s skin crawl. And no offense to your skin, but it can crawl all it wants if I know Zero is on the toilet passing building materials. And he is. If the polls hold up, his team will be working 24/7 trying to figure out a way to dodge debates.
Newt is probably ahead of your candidate in the polls because of their side by side comparison in the debates and his 21st CENTURY CONTRACT with AMERICA.
Are you enjoying all the great things Newt won for us with the Contract with America: term limits, laws that apply to the rest of us applying to Congress, reduced congressional committees, the Balanced Budget Amendment, etc.?
Newt talks a good game, but when push came to shove, Newt folded.
I don’t have a candidate. They all suck. I will vote for the GOP nominee while again holding my nose.
ROFLOL, you don’t watch that crap on tv do you, my god, high stakes poker is 80% blind ass luck.
Yep. That’s why the same names are in the top ten year after year...blind luck. You take that idea and $100,000 bucks to Vegas, go to the Bellagio, take a seat at “the game” and they wouldn’t even let you leave with your shoes on.
You really are one stupid son of a buck.
Just stick where you think dummy, but unless you have a hole in your chair, you may need to stand up. In a game where 3/4 of the games are won by not showing your cards, winning is luck.
“In a game where 3/4 of the games are won by not showing your cards, winning is luck.”
I won’t break the cardinal rule, sonny;
“Never educate a stupid poker player.”
